I went for GAP insurance for the first time when I purchased a Scirocco as I know the hassle you can have with your insurance company when it comes to putting a write-off value on your car - you want as much as possible and they want to pay as little as possible.
I would advise buying GAP insurance on-line; it is typically a lot cheaper than buying through a VW dealer.

VW dealers will rip you off with GAP. I paid £127 with "directgap" for 3 year cover (return to invoice). I feel it's worth it for peace of mind.
