Here you go...........

Fuel Tank Capacity
1 - How Low?
2 - How Low?

;)

The highest quantity of fuel I've put in one filling is 54.12 litres.

Then sometimes on a rainy Sunday afternoon when the garden gets too wet..... a doodle. Apart from the two amber "low" segments on the dial, all readings relate to the major tick marks. Values are in litres. The top 6 litres of the fuel tank saturate the pointer on FULL.

Also, there is a tank characteristic setting in VCDS - Adaption in the Instruments Controller Module 17. Not investigated it yet or know whether it makes adjustments on the Scirocco.

There's something strange that I noticed. As RW1 said, I also calculated that when you only have the 2 amber segments left on the dial and the light flashes there about 7 litres of fuel in the tank. This means that if you drive nice and steady, you can get a 6, maybe a 6,5l/100km from a 1,4tsi. So, in theory, you can drive 100km/60 miles more from the time you have 2 segments left. BUT, in real life, after driving very gently, after about 50-60km, the needle is down to empty.
So what does this mean? Simple. You have about 2,5-3 litres left in your tank but the needle says it's empty and the range is down to 0. VW have conceived a scheme to play with your mind and force you to refill by making the needle go down faster. I have managed to keep very 'cool' on 2 occasions and go further with the range on 0. The result was that 55,19 and 55,7 litres got inside(the last one was when I got the car from the dealer's).

The point of the story is that you can keep on driving for about 50-60km from the time the range shows 0 and the needle has hit the floor. Of course, you need nerves of steel. :D

ps: I know someone who has managed a 56,4 and a 57,1 refill.

You can go for about 50-60km from the moment the range shows 0 and the needle is all the way down(tested by me), without the engine stoping. I tried this a couple of times and after that I managed to squeez 55,19 and 55,7 litres in the tank.

I have a friend with a diesel Scirocco and he took it to 57.

Same here - I ran my previous Astra to 5 miles - left it parked on my drive which is quite a steep slope, and it obviously was enough of a gradient to remove fuel from the outlet on the tank as it wouldn't start later that day. Don't know if a Scirocco is the same, but adding petrol wasn't enough to get it going again - I had to get the AA man out to use his laptop to tell the engine it had fuel again and was OK to start.

if your running a TDI then you dont have the problem.
Don't run out of Diesel as it can be a very expensive problem!! It would usually involve a tow truck to a dealer to have the system purged of air which sometimes involves having to dismantle all of the injectors (Depending on Engine age and manufacture etc, the newer the engine the more work and cost!). Alternatively if you decide to just refill with Diesel then you run the very high risk of damaging the injectors and having to replace them all! Nice!!

It is a far bigger problem running out of Diesel than petrol, so not quite sure what you're on about peter.vw!!

Anyone still want to see how far their car goes after the 0 indication!

Closest I ever got was 30 miles over the "0 miles", with a 53.9l fill up. Is the 7l reserve part of the 55l, or is it 55l + 7l capacity?

Off-topic, but best I managed was 32 miles in my old BMW, with the aircon off, radio off, windows shut, helium right-foot, heart in mouth and AA card/mobile at the ready. Probably had 1.5l left.

Apart from the risks of expensive damage to your car, why put yourself thru all the hassle of hitching a lift to the nearest garage and back or waiting hours for recovery ?
Keep it filled up.

On a couple of occasions I've been within 5-10mile range, and usually find I fill up with just under 50 litres.

The computer takes time to adjust to your driving style though.

I don't see why anyone would want to run the risk with this exercise, as has already been suggested, running out is mighty inconvenient as well as potentially causing expensive damage. :shake:

Remembeer Clarkson and co. ? They ran 30-40miles on fuel in reserve and pipes etc when they did their brim to cap and see who got the furthest........ I've done 10miles on 0 but then unfairly brimmed it and got another 9ouple litres after the pump clicked off.
