There's something strange that I noticed. As RW1 said, I also calculated that when you only have the 2 amber segments left on the dial and the light flashes there about 7 litres of fuel in the tank. This means that if you drive nice and steady, you can get a 6, maybe a 6,5l/100km from a 1,4tsi. So, in theory, you can drive 100km/60 miles more from the time you have 2 segments left. BUT, in real life, after driving very gently, after about 50-60km, the needle is down to empty.
So what does this mean? Simple. You have about 2,5-3 litres left in your tank but the needle says it's empty and the range is down to 0. VW have conceived a scheme to play with your mind and force you to refill by making the needle go down faster. I have managed to keep very 'cool' on 2 occasions and go further with the range on 0. The result was that 55,19 and 55,7 litres got inside(the last one was when I got the car from the dealer's).
The point of the story is that you can keep on driving for about 50-60km from the time the range shows 0 and the needle has hit the floor. Of course, you need nerves of steel.
ps: I know someone who has managed a 56,4 and a 57,1 refill.
