Or if you are an advanced driver like myself, who has passed an intensive 3-week driving course to drive emergency ambulances, taught by driver trainers who were trained by police driving instructors. I always drive with my hands in the '10 to 2' position. So I am not a learner, nor just about to take my driving test.BAIKAR wrote:yeah if your a learner and just about to take your driving test. The steering wheel is shaped to fit your hands at 9 and 3. the old wheel is better with the perforations at this positions.iAmbu wrote:The correct hand positioning for advanced driving is hands in the '10 to 2' (on a clock) position, so I'd say the perforated area is in the right place.maisbitt wrote:I'm a bit mystified as to why the perforated parts of the leather on the wheel are the exact opposite to those on the old wheel, i'd expect the perforations on the bits your hands are expected to grip most of the time.

I was told that now they recommend 9:30 & 2:30 as the place to hold the steering wheel, because when you are at 10 & 2 more people are having there arms broken when the air bag is activated. Could be wrong, but if I crash my new Roc when it arrives I will be using the airbags to mop up the tears!!!!!!

The most natural place to hold the steering wheel with both hands is to have your thumbs hooked just over the left and right wheel spokes, which would be approx 9:15. It also means that your thumbs are in the correct place for pressing any of the buttons on the multifunction wheel without moving your hands up and down the wheel to reach the buttons.
I still maintain that the perforations are in the correct place on the old wheel, old doesn't always mean inferior. I think they got it right on the original wheel.
Having the advanced driving test under your belt doesn't prove you're a better driver, it just proves you were a safe driver on the day you did your test. How many people feed the steering wheel and not cross their hands once they've passed their test? That push-pull stuff is designed to slow you down on a turn. An ambulance driver making a quick turn on the way to an emergency isn't going to be doing all that push-pull stuff.

Ooooo - Looks like this is getting heated! Lets see if I can upset everyone!
This argument goes way back to when I took my test over 30 years ago and probably beyond! The police said 10 to 2 and pretty much everyone else disagreed.
IMO In almost all modern cars it is better (most of the time) to drive with hands at 9 & 3. It's more comfortable and as has been pointed out, it's where the switches are! No brainer. On just about any road it is not necessary to turn the wheel more than around a quarter turn avoiding any crossed arms so it's also safe. In something like an ambulance with a larger wheel and more turns, lock to lock, that's not necessarily the case so in more circumstances 10 to 2 might be better.
When taking a tight turn in any vehicle, 10 to 2 is sensible as is feeding the wheel though hands as only a total joker will agree that driving with forearms locked at 180 degrees is the brightest idea of the day.
That's why we have these things called arms which allow us to change the position of our hands on the wheel to suit the circumstance!

Re: First to get a 2010 shout up !
hey guys, picked up my new gt 2.0 tsi dsg on the 14th of july. It arrived a month ahead of schedule
and was pleased to find out its the new spec/ as i wasn't sure what i would get as my dealer had not informed me of the build date.
i wasnt really sure what the differences were but it must be the new one as it has the white mfd, oil temp etc. looks nice does the job.
just thought i'd share that with you![Smile :)](./images/smilies/smile.gif)
i can put probably get some night time pictures with it all lit up if thats what people are after...?
also, does anyone else get a metallic rattle noise when accelerating between 2000 and 2800rpm? performance seems fine, just a bit of an annoying noise?? i think ive read a post about this topic already but any input would be appreciated![Smile :)](./images/smilies/smile.gif)
cheers guys
