I think if you drive reasonably quickly, you'll see lower figures than that from the Petrol. At least from the 2.0 TSI. I did a round trip to Paris at the weekend and got a little behind myself coming back. Consequently, at a steady 115 or so, I was getting figures down around the 20mpg mark. I've found that cruising at low 80s returns numbers round about 33-34mpg. When my wife drives it the numbers always seem to average around 36mpg and she's very light footed so I'd be surprised if you see much higher than that...
Out of interest, I let it get very low the other day as I was holding out for a UK petrol station coming off the tunnel. When I filled it up the pump said I'd put 52.6 litres in. Book reckons it's a 50 litre tank.......... (It was saying "0" miles left on the readout to be fair....)

I thought it was a 55 litre tank? I put in 52 litres this morning and still had 15 miles left on the computer range. I got 330 miles off those 52 litres with a mix of driving styles over the tank.

yes i'd reckon that is 28mpg

I dont usually let the fuel gauge get down to 15 on the range, but I trust your Maths, the long term average shows about 32mpg

Manual says "about 55 litres" specs in brochure say 50 litres for fuel tank capacity. If you better 33mpg on the 2.0TSI, 37mpg on the 1.4TSI or 50mpg on the 2.0TDI through normal everyday use you're doing well or driving like a nun.

As for dirty and noisy diesels - the DPF takes care of the soot and is comparatively cleaner in its emissions that either of the petrols. The CR units have much improved idling noise, still a little noisier than a petrol, but not much. At 80MPH the diesel is noticeably quieter than either petrol as it revs at 2000rpm @ 80MPH vis approx 3500rpm @ 80MPH in the petrol ones.

There's a little more fun to be had in the 2.0TSI than the diesel - but define fun? More smiles behind the wheel, or around £50 a month more money for going out on the lash if you have the diesel?

1.4TSI vs 2.0TDI is a no brainer if you want GT levels of equipment, VW will have your eyes out for the speccing all the GT stuff on a 1.4TSI. The 1.4TSI is quicker off the line, but try accelerating up a hill in a 1.4TSI from 50MPH to 80 vs the TDI and see who's fastest then!

So the choice is being a bit quicker from a standstill and being smacked in the wallet every week, or let those 17 year old charvas with their 1.2 Corsas (sporting a cannon-barrelled sized exhaust) have their fun when they get ahead of you from a standstill at the roundabout, knowing full well that their car is shite - if you have the TDI, and then piss past them 100 yards later when they've ran out of steam changing up to 3rd.

Just to throw a something extra into the mixing pot.....I foresee the price difference between diesel and petrol at the pumps narrowing in the next few weeks. Currently average prices from petrolprices.com show diesel as only 4p a litre more expensive (99.6p for petrol vs 103.9p) This is due to over-supply of diesel and speculators pushing up the price of unleaded. I actually worked out my calculations based on diesel being about 10% more expensive than petrol to fill up. But Now we are down to nearer 4% - and I am pretty sure this will be down to 1 or 2 pence per litre over the next month or so. So good news for diesel owners!
