Just as an update to anyone else trying to sell their car.
I had the car on pistonheads, autotrader, and on several forums but only had 1 call about the car (which didn't lead anywhere).
I traded it in to a small performance car dealer who advertised the car at £400 more than I had, and it was sold within 3 days.
Looks like the theory that people either don't want to or can't afford to buy privately is correct.

Interesting.
I think there is a perception that dealers have to give a 3 month warranty which opens up a bigger customer base to them. I don't think they do though, the car just has to be fit for purpose when its sold.
People just have it in their heads that they will only buy from a dealer and not privately.

It's understandable though. If you buy a car from a dealer, even with no warranty, you still have some comeback if the car falls apart soon after. But you bought it private then you'd be stuffed.
I'd feel a lot more comfortable buying a £15k car from a dealer rather than Joe Bloggs for this reason alone.

I think it's also down to access to finance as well as warranty
Hard to get an unsecured loan these days and HP secured on the car is much easier to get accepted for.
Ability to P/X current vehicle is also important to a lot of people, as selling privately, as you've found out, can be difficult.

My car still had best part of 4 months VW warranty on it!
My gut feeling is its the finance thing, and the ability to use a credit card...

Although most garages have a limit on what they will accept by credit card, even if you just pay the deposit by credit card and the balance by other means, you get Section 75 protection on the full purchase value.

It is one, two and/or three of the three..... 1) access to finance needed, 2) part ex, 3) handing over large sums of cash for a private sale.
I bought my car from a dealer instead of privately mainly because of 3, and partly because of 2.
It's case by case.

finance ..... all the way. Invest your money into something that will make you money. Car's unfortunately for most of us are depreciating assets, no matter what shine/protection products the stealers try and sell you!!!
