It was a stock vehicle unregistered list price £27500 they had it up at £24500 plus the £1000 for taking the PCP plus free servicing for three years. There was a mix up prior to delivery and I nearly pulled out of the deal, then managed to negotiate a further £500 off. It was the spec I wanted apart from the colour, I swore I would never have a black car again, however once I saw it I was hooked!! They also had a 122 and 160 in viper at the time also a white R, but they where also sold. A number of other dealers had these type of deals around christmas and new year and thought I had missed out with local dealers but cast the net a bit wider and found this one, this was a couple of months ago however Im sure if you push dealers at the moment you will get the deals as others have.

Volkswagen have stock clearance deals every now and again on overaged stock,it will have been one of those. I got £5k off one in 2010.

What did you pay for yours ?

Ive been thinking of purchasing a new motor and wondered what people have paid for their car. Theres always seems to be an air of secrecey about what people actually pay for their cars. The way the dealers are in this country stinks.

To help other potential buyers - Help beat the dealers.

There must be some good deals out there ??

Mine:

NEW @ £23,219 2.0 TSi GT Manual, Metalic, Dynaudio, Sensors, Servicing .0TR. Crewe VW. June 2010 . Todays VW list price for the same spec car £27,274

What about you ??

Just ordered today a new build GT 170, DSG, Nav, Leather, Xenons, Cruise, Folding Mirrors, Reverse Sensors, 3 year Service Plan, Mats from and Rear in Candy white (now a cost open!) - List is £29,400 - Deal inclusive of £1k VW contribution £24,600

Top tip - take the PCP route to secure the dealer contribution and then settle the finance after 3 months if your finances allow so you minimise interest and maximise the contribution :-)

In reality its about 11 percent - plus the £1k from VW FS - which on the humble 122PS I am ordering pushes it up to almost 15% off!

UPDATE: Cancelled the order for the manual 122PS and found a ten month old GT TDI 170 with DSG for £19k! Very happy!

Yup - mine is set a smidge under 12%. Does anyone pay list for a car these days?

The trick is to be able to get the discount applied to price with options else they tend to rack the price back up again with these. Asking for free mats, flaps and a tank of fuel is still worth a shot too

Thats a good point - the percentage needs to be of the total cost of the car, including optional extras, to be comparable (ie, the point of this thread!).

I've always haggled with the dealers ever since I bought my first new car in 1981. My father-in-law taught me the best way to do it and a few tricks to try as well. And when you've screwed the best deal you can then you ask about mudflaps, mats, 12 months tax and a tank of fuel.
So its nothing new.
Having said that my dad was a salesman's dream. He'd go in to the show room and ask "How much is one of those please?" and that's what he'd pay

I read somewhere that they can't pay your road tax anymore in the same way they can't buy your car and cash the tax in as its a personal tax or some other mumble jumbo - they can however discount the car to the value and that's fine!

My wife refuses to come with me when I buy a car now as she feels awkward watching me wear the guy down

12 months tax is part of the OTR charges so is always included in the list price for a new car, along with delivery and number plates. Also it doesn't matter how much you wear them down they still win otherwise they just won't sell you the car :-)

This is very true although I've yet to be asked to leave 8) - to me it's all part of the dance and being in Sales I know they expect to be challenged - I was once told the mark of a good negotiation is where both parties leave the table feeling like they have been screwed, although I am not so sure today this is the case, more like everyone has to leave the party with a balloon :)

I think there are times of the month/year though when the dealers are more likely to drop margins - October to December is a 1/4 when dealers are keen to hit their year end numbers especially the weeks around Christmas and the New Year - They are between new plate releases and a very quiet period, so heavy cuts can be offered in order to maintain sales.

Additionally, the best time of the month to buy is the last day or two - again dealerships will do everything they can to complete a sale to hit their monthly targets. As for which day of the week, Fridays are typically the quietest day and so you will always get the full attention of the Sales guy who 'just maybe' under pressure to hit his weekly sales target.

Happy hunting

I don't think the timing is as important these days with VW unless your taking a car out of stock as the sales don't really count until the car is delivered and the sales guy gets their comission. With the way factory leadtimes can be it can be difficult to predict.

I guess that depends on how the commission scheme is set up. Regardless however, they will have a number to hit each week/month/year and that really was my drift. :)

I agree they have monthly targets to meet but any VW salesperson I know looks under pressure with the tagets compared to Vauxhall and Ford but I appreciate that can vary from dealer to dealer.
