Is it pretty straightforward to use VCDS?whiteDevil_170 wrote:i have a genuine vcds cable that i bought from a member on here. he bought it new from genden.alanr wrote:How much was the software and cable pleasewhiteDevil_170 wrote:Done something a bit different today. For once I didn't wash it!!!!
I vagcomd it !!!!
Lol.
What did I do well.
I activated cornering fog lights
Big mph speedo as always wanted that.
and made my headlight switch work how it should work not every single light always on. Now when I leave it in auto they will only come on when it's dark.
when you buy the cable new it doesnt come with software. you download the software from the ross tech website for free. but you have to have a genuine cable. once connected to a car it registers the cable .
if you see a cable for sale and it comes with a disc and they say its the software for it. then most likely it is a copy cable and not a genuine one.
genuine cables come with technical support and updates, copy ones dont.
But would someone who is useless at coding etc. Be able to get their head around it and make changes? Tbh.. The main reason I want one is for a diagnosis tool.. as the money saved over time is better than £80 a pop at the local vw specialist.whiteDevil_170 wrote:Yes it's relatively straight forward to use.
It's just getting your head round understanding bits and bytes terms. And finding the modules that you want to change the coding.
To change the coding is simply either tick or untick a box then press do it!
whiteDevil_170 wrote:Yes. I have never done anything like this before. And was quite nervous about doing it. But watched plenty of youtube videos. And read alot of threads on here so I knew what to do.
The 1st thing you have to do before changing anything is an auto scan. This gives you a base code for all the control modules and if anything was to go wrong later on then just put that code back in and it will go back to how it was. This also will show you any fault codes. So its super easy to do a diagnostic scan. I got 2 fault codes come up on my scan and I crapped myself. Looked into it and it was the bulb out error from my sidelights. I have leds in which are not canbus bulbs. Clear the code and all was good.

Mine is the micro can which works on cars based on mk5 golf platform. If you plan on working on newer platforms like golf mk7 then get the hex.
Micro is cheaper. I know that rob a member on here is going to be selling his hex soon so perhaps keep an eye out for that.
As for buying it elsewhere I don't know. If I was to buy a new one then it would be from genden.
Really?!?!?!?! I thought hex was for older platforms, not newer ones.whiteDevil_170 wrote:Well genden sell two types . Hex cable and micro can cable.

Got a feeling that isn't entirely accurate info. The CAN I think is the new interface, this is why you cant use Micro CAN on older models and are advised to buy Hex if you want to work on older cars, since the HEX covers the lot.whiteDevil_170 wrote:I was told the micro can is for models up to mk5 golf platform. After that and on newer model cars you would need hex. That's why the hex is more money.
Can you use your micro can cable on multiple PC's?whiteDevil_170 wrote:Well genden sell two types . Hex cable and micro can cable.

As far as I am aware. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes! I use my micro can on multiple PCs and it's still ok. It's already licenced to you anywayandyy wrote:Can you use your micro can cable on multiple PC's?whiteDevil_170 wrote:Well genden sell two types . Hex cable and micro can cable.

After reading up on them on an actual computer screen and not my phone screen I have found that I only need the Micro can cable as it's from the mk5 (Golf R32) platform onwards.
