Rumbling from rear

Post by Bushiee »

Anyone had a rumbling from the rear at motorway speeds before? Seems to be louder when when decelerating, not sure if its the diesel exhaust or tyre noise, the TSi never made a noise like it

As I said on the other forum I get it too and put it down to the Pirelli P Zeros as it changes with road surface.

I noticed a strange sound coming from the front of the car. Not a rumble as such, and not all that perceptible. On Tuesday I had some new P Zero Rosso's fitted and the sound has gone.

Hows about swapping the rear tyres to the front, see if that makes a difference...

Mind you, if you've only just picked it up, then yeah, perhaps it should go straight back for them to check.

Hi bushier

Yeah, as chrisyboyc said it is a bulging of the inner edge of the rear tyres, mine has the same fault (apparently a common fault according to my local tyre shop), not sure if swapping them to the front would fix it or not.
Certainly take the car back to the dealer and see what response you get.

So what does the wear on the tread pattern look like? Centre worn, outer edge worn, inner edge worn? Both tyres or which side?

Usually when this noise occurs the tyre has stepped which means the centre has worn more than the outer edges. some blame over inflation but most regard this as a general problem with the Mk5 chassis..

I didnt get a look on the ramp but when i looked they looked ok, maybe the inner edge is more worn than the rest but as far as my eye can see they didnt seem too bad, especially to warrant a racket like they were making!

I'm just wondering if the 'toe' setting is set wrong on the rear axle causing the tyres to be dragged slightly. Which why I asked where the wear was.
