Hi all,
I'm afraid to say after a very bad week it turns out my car may be sick. When starting up a few hours ago for a quick spin there was a strange grinding noise that seems to speed up with engine speed and sounds likes it's coming from something that turns due to it's "swishing" if that makes any sense. Also when idling along at highway speeds with the radio off there is a "tap" noise you can hear when you re-apply the accelerator pedal. I'm sure it's never done it before and you can press and release the pedal repeatedly and it'll make this tap/knock noise each time. Has anyone any idea on what could be wrong? Has anyone else tried this with the throttle while idling?
Thanks for any help.
G

Hi G,
I appreciate you made this post a very long time ago, but did you get the "tap" noise sorted?
My Scirocco 170 is going into the VW garage tomorrow for the same issue. They think it is something wrong with the gearbox...
Cheers,
Tom

Re: Engine problem? Strange noise...
It's strange that no one discussed this:
there seem to be a pipe in the engine bay to the inside of the car, its purpose is to amplify the engine noise inside the car.
check this thread: http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4323" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
no one here mentioned anything about it.
they say removing it will remove the noise and gives a better throttle response

Re: Engine problem? Strange noise...
I had the car into VW around march time. They investigated this issue and concluded that it was a 'characteristic of the car' (or more commonly known as 'I don't have a clue'). They claimed it was some slack in the gearbox that when accelerating, the gears catch up with one another, creating a small tapping sound. It doesn't seem to be a common feature from what I read on here.
Anyway, it is getting progressively worse, so they are investigating it at a different dealership when it goes in for a service in a couple of weeks.
I will update with further info when I know.
