Scirocco - Best Value Coupe?

According to the Daily Mail article below the Scirocco (1.4 - 122) is the best value Coupe on the market, only costing £15.7k to keep on the road for 3 years, in comparison to the target of £18.7k - what are everyone's thoughts in general for value for money?

I think it's probably a pretty good contender to be up there. Not a lot of competition though. The astra GTC isn't too bad I suppose but the TT is too pricey.

The biggest cost in running a new car is depreciation, and that's what makes the Scirocco a "cheap" car to run compared to a lot of it's competitors that may be significantly cheaper in RRP but have poor residuals. Desirability plays a big part.

One of the main reasons I bought a Roc. Yes it looks great and is well equipped, but if it depreciated heavily (relative to the alternatives out there), I wouldn't have bought one.

It may well be cheaper to own a new Audi TT for 3 years than a Hyundai Coupe or the Peugeot TT pretender that cost a lot less to buy but probably won't hold onto 40% of their RRP after 3 years.

I lost £4k on mine in 2 years when I traded in my Pewter 140GT, some of this was due to the effect of VAT going up (which bolstered used prices a bit when the new cars RRP went up in price), but even so, 2 grand a year depreciation on a £21k car (at the time) is excellent. I'm anticipating my 170GT to be worth £13k-14k after 3 years.

I have just bought an April 11 rocco r and taking into account all the extras, it's gone down £9k in 10 months, but it does depend on the model And any deal u get in the show room guess. I'm not complaining that's for sure i got a great car and I have never felt so excited everytime I drive it before!

Tootie: The R is a different beast to the other Rocs - it's at the far extreme of price range, and is in a comparable bracket to TTs, Boxters, Nissan 350Z etc. It may not seem as desireable amongst it's natural competitors at it's price range as the "normal" Rocs are. For a non Roc enthusiast, the Roc R looks poor value at full RRP vs a 2.0TSI. Huge price difference for less extra BHP than a relatively cheap remap can provide and a few extras over the GT. As a used car I can't see the R sitting more than £2k above a 2.0TSI.

In either case, you say it's lost £9k in 10 months, but that's only if you sold it now. The longer you keep it, the less it will have lost per year, and as soon as you drive it off the forecourt you've lost the dealership's profit if you were to sell it on e.g. new ones go for £28k, ex demos go for £26k, dealer is only going to want to give you £22k to sell it on at £26k - 6 grand lost in no time at all etc.

If you buy an R new then you don't buy it with your head.

I have a 1.4 TSI 160 and think the Scirocco is first class in terms of general running costs not just depreciation. The car has reached 3 years and I plan to hold on to it another year; have just taken a VW extended warranty - comprehensive, no excess and including recovery - for £219 which is very reasonable. What Car quotes the overall 3 year running costs as: 1.4 TSI 160 - 52.8 ppm, 2.0 TSI - 61.7 ppm and the R - 73.4 ppm. You pay a pretty heavy price for the extra performance of the R and I guess part of this is higher depreciation.
