Extended Warranty

Post by chr15 »

Has anyone taken out an extended warranty through VW. My cars coming up to 3 years on the 7th Jan and I haven't had the letter as yet that they apparently send out. No idea of what it costs and not sure if I will take it out but will still be good to hear from others.

I bought one a few years ago for my R32 and it was spot on but relatively expensive because it was based on engine capacity :-(

Mine is coming up for its 3 years (March) but I don't intend to buy extended warranty although I have had one warranty claim on it, water pump leak. As I am only on 11k miles I would like to think that niggly new car faults have been ironed out now.

I have done 17k in 2.5 yrs had have had rear back box replaced, engine sound proofing replaced, stereo replaced, bonnet resprayed due to lacquer fault, accelerator pedal and wiring replaced.
Now if that wasn`t under warranty it would`ve cost quite a bit. All cars are different and owners may just put up with small faults so IMO if your one who loves to keep your car in tip condition then get a extended warranty

Seems it won't give you a price unless you are logged in with your ID and PIN - which you have to ring Cust. Services to get.

When I done it a few years ago, I called them up and within 5mins they sent me an email with all the options available to me.

It would seem now you get a letter with the details and a log in.

It's not really too much hassle to give them a call.

As with any warranty, make sure you read the small print and specifically the claim limits.

When I took out the warranty on my R32 I was concerned about the DSG and Haldex.

It is part of the transmission in a 4WD set up. It transfers power to the rear wheels in a proportion that meets the demands and traction conditions.

AS above it's the manufacturer of the coupling used by the VAG group in their AWD systems for transverse engines. R32 is AWD

With my Rocco I am likely to exceed the 60k mile limit pretty early in the 3rd year so might look into getting the unlimited mileage extension when the time comes depending how troublesome the car is and the cost to do so

Just enquired with Volkswagen Approved Warranty ......
https://www.volkswagenextendedwarranty.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Based on today, (2012 year prices not yet declared) against my Scirocco, 13,000 miles, projected to 18,000 miles by Oct'2012.

Comprehensive: £191
Named Component: £161
Driveline: £142

(For a 12 month period. All above quotes with £0 excess level. Repair/replacement work has to be at a VW dealer. Car annual servicing has to be at a VW dealer on time.)

No time limit on number of renewed years. Limited to 100,000 miles max. Has annual mileage caps, the above being 15,000 per year.

Notification letter of your user & PIN will only be sent out 2 weeks before the expiry of the 3rd year of VW's new car warranty. But they are happy to give verbal quotation like today, for me 10 months ahead based on todays prices. Just need your car registration and then ask the usual security questions about yourself before proceeding to quote.

That's pretty damn cheap, my R32 was over £600 for comprehensive with unlimited mileage. it was based on engine capacity so R32 suffered greatly from that perspective.

Can they actually stipulate that or do the Exemption Regs only apply to original warranties on new cars?

Yes, cos its being run and underwritten by a French Company as the link posted shows - Mondial Assistance. I asked that question and they were quite clear it had to be VW dealership with VW parts, not 3rd party suppliers.

Only like car insurance these days, a lot only let you take the car for repair to their bodyshop.

Insurance company cannot make you take the car to their bodyshop or affiliate for repair. It's your car and you can it repaired anywhere you want, however what they do is make it more awkward for you to use someone outside their network.

But they can walk away as you've refused the repair they offer under the policy small print. Leaving you to foot the bodyshop cost.

Just gone through it with my insurance. I had it repaired by the insurer and their bodyshops was given no option other than pay for it myself. The VW bodyshop was refused as an option. A little change that happened in the small print of my policy as previously I had the option with this particular company. No more it seems wrt my policy. Fortunately it has worked out OK in the end.

I've recently went through it as well and both insurance companies wanted me to use their respective bodyshops and I refused saying I wanted the work done by my VW dealer citing the 12 year bodywork warranty. They both backed down and the car was repaired at my VW dealer.

As said, it was amended in my policy small print. At the end of the day, its what VW Extended Warrenty has offered. If one doesn't like it that use of the dealers & VW parts is required..... standard advice --> shop around.

I have not yet to read through their terms & conditions in detail to check the operator was talking cookie.

C.

ETA: Perhaps I should have said.... The non-dealer associated bodyshop where it went, was fully VW approved to a higher standard on VW (UK) Ltd's list than my local VW dealership bodyshop. So I hadn't a leg to stand on anyway.

I never got the PIN letter so phoned them today and they said my warranty ran out Aug 11 which is not the case. So I found VW customer care who were very helpful and confirmed mine runs out 8th Jan. Girl I spoke to called the warranty people, sorted it out and then transferred me through.

I was just quoted for my car on 16k with a mileage cap of 15k per year

Comprehensive: £337
Named Component: £269
Drive Line: £228

All with £0 excess. The prices with the excess are not worth the difference.

Why is yours so much cheaper

Can't decide if I want it though...

I've just added the mileages I used in my original post. The preniums were based on a projected 18,000 miles at 3 years.

Can't see it being the fact that I was quoted 2011 premiums which were expiring this week. Premiums for 2012 would not rise that far.

Just maybe, maintenance/faults statistics are showing higher number of confirmed rectifications against the MY2009? And the figures they are using are broader than the Scirocco as it uses common components with other VAG models

So the little squirt of a 160ps has advantage over you big boys :D
