Which Oil?

Post by sicourt »

I have now done 6000 miles in my Roc and it needs its first oil 'top up' - the 'oil' section of the Scirocco manual gives VW codes for the type of oil I should use, but I just want to go to Halfords to get a bottle (and not line the dealers pockets with a big mark up.) When I picked up the car it was on a long-life service, which was switched to annual by the dealer on collection day as I purchased the service pack as i was picking up the car - but it would still have long life oil in it. Exactly what type of oil would match what is currently in the engine - I am assuming it would be Castrol, but what grade, etc? Cheers

VW now use longlife oil no matter what the service regime is these days.

You can use any 5W-30 oil that meets VW505.00/VW507.00 such as Castrol Edge, Mobil 1 ESP, Shell Helix Ultra VSX etc...

The spec doesn't mean any 5w-30 is acceptable only fully synthetic oil with the bottle marked VW505/507.00 many premium and not so premium oils are not approved/tested. Castrol magnatec is for example not an approved oil.

VW505.00/VW507.00
Correct oil for TSI (2.0 or 1.4) is 504.00/502.00.
505.00/507.00 is diesel engine oil standard. 5w30

504.00 is Longlife 5w30
502.00 is 12 month/10,000 mile service interval. 5w40

The reason for this oil specification is because the engines are direct cylinder injection and so no washing of the inlet valves occurs by the injectors. If you use earlier or other standards of oil such as Castrol Magnatec, then a build up of deposit from the oil breather will build up on the inlet valves on the manifold side causing the engine intake ports & valves to clog up.

As far as I can read on Castrol homepage Magnatec 5w 40 is approved for the 1,4 tsi 160.
Is that not correct? I know several shops using that oil in Sweden for the 12month/15000km oil change.

Done some looking around today......... here are the current lists (11.12.11).
VW Approved 50200_50500 111211.pdf
VW Approved 50400_50700 111211.pdf
And I'm quite surprised to find Castrol Magnatec listed but these lists are ALL the oils, not specifically Scirocco and Scirocco 1.4TSi.

Still wouldn't use it in the 1.4 as I have long running experience in my 8v & VR6 with it to keep the hydraulic tappets quiet. Its a strange oil, goes quite "waxy" once in use. And there is more oil deposits on the throttle body when cleaning at the services. Not sure those are properties I would want in the 1.4TSi.

The Shell Helix AV-L 5w30 (504/507 standard) when I drained it last year stayed the same as filled when new oil, apart from being dirty.

The Dealers around here are using 504.00/507.00 standard. Castrol Magnatec doesn't appear in that list above. Here in the UK, the Castrol UK web page backs that up with only specifying their Castrol Edge.

And it states for the 1.4TSi in Sweden..... Castrol Edge, no Magnatec????

So :? :? :? about what you have read.

Ah yes, found that tonight.... Did struggle with the langauge yesterday.
Castrol Sweden 121211.JPG
Still wouldn't use it in the 1.4 for the reasons I experience in my other two cars. Just bought the last stock in the UK of 15w40 for those two engines, so its not that I dislike the oil, more what I see through many years use. As said, its a strange oil in 15w40 grade. In its 15w40 grade its only part synthetic but the 5w40 is fully synthetic, so maybe ......
