What are the handbook recommendations as regards running in the new Scirocco 2.0TSI?
Are people sticking to it?

Really it's just a matter of not over revving or labouring the engine. Run at variable engine speeds but don't go over 2/3 max engine speed that's for the first 1000 miles. Tyres and brakes take about 3-400 miles to bed in. I always run in new cars.

Thats clearly your own opinion, but what does the book say??
Most engines are run on the bench, the whole 'running in' of the 'engines' is a bit of a con otherwise you'd be takign them back to get the running in oil removed. . .
What you are really running is the rest of the transmission and brakes etc. .

Well actually if you want it word for word
The engine needs to be run in during the first 1500 km.

I tried to simplyfy it in my previous post.

I disagree like iroc says running in engines is important. As an example my last car has hardly used any oil in the ownership over 4 years where somepeople use a litre per 1000 miles. I do think tyres and brakes are also very important to run in. seems to be lots of views on this. Lots of things state that running the engine fairly hard helps create a better seal for the piston rings. IT also states that oil should be changed after the first few hundred miles... here is one example

At the end of the day it's upto you. You can do it as stated in the manual or take the advice as in the link.

going by the manual is probably the safe bet, just found it interesting that there are different schools of thought on the subject

The trouble is with modern technology you don't know what the dealer can see when they plug the computer into the car. And as we all know if something goes wrong and you have not followed the guidelines they would try their hardest to get out of paying.

You're all still assuming that the 'running in' refers to the engine.
You need to run in al the other rotating/moving componenets aswell, not just the engine.
Do the bulk of guys think the factory long life servicing is a good system?? Up to 20k / 2yrs on the same oil??
It's defo not for me, mine will be being set on time distance and will be getting around 6k mile oil changes.

The OP asked what was the handbook recommendations and that is what is in the handbook. What you choose to do is upto you. I would not run it for 2 years on the original but that is my decision.

running in a car seems to have been a disucssion on many a forum over the last few years.
I agree with iroc it has to be best to follow the guide as set by VW, as that way you will probably have the best protection, as who knows what engaine management systems record these days.

Hi guys,
Well I am now at 1000 miles and I have not followed the guidelines too closely. My previous MKV GTi was run in as per book and it drank the oil, needed a full litre top up every 3-4000 miles, this got slightly better after 20 odd thousand but still no more than 5000 miles before needing a full litre ( Actually did half litres every 2500 before you ask).
I also ride motorbikes and it is common knowledge that if you ride new bikes hard then they make more power. I do not intend to keep my car more than 3 years so any long term effect will not affect me hopefully.
Pootling around in a hot hatch is not for me although I totally respect those who do, 25 k aint small change after all. i also understand those that have concerns about long life oil but my take on this is e are basing our opinions on how it used to be, 6000 mile intervals and new sump full of castrol GTX but I am sure that the millions VAG spend on research and Development have shown that these new hi tech oils are fit for the long term. I mean VW are not gonna risk shed loads of customers coming back with expensive warranty claims are they ? all IMHO of course

sir-rocco, tfsi's do like a drink, collected other halfs gti pirelli yesterday and asked about running in to dealer and there view was not to worry these days but do not go full throttle for 600 miles, this is at odds with the vw recommendations and i have told her to play safe, my 2.0tfsi was run in along audi guidelines (75% power in 6th is licence losing and the low end torque made it not too much of a chore )and drinks 0.5l every 5k so similar, i have been told others have been know to drink more, glad you are enjoying it, mine may be arriving a week sooner

Since the engine is the same as Mk5 GTI..
I was told, not over 3000 revs for first 500 miles, and keep an eye on the oil level.

Those are not VAG engine codes
VAG Codes are usually 3 letters.
