2.0 TSI 210 vs TDI 170

Post by Daz85UK »

Hi,

Sorry for bombarding the forum with alot of questions.

I'm very close to ordering a Scirocco GT now but I can't decide on TDI 170 or TSI 210.

I do a daily journey to and from work of about 20 minutes on some 50mph roads but the speed is not sustained for ver long, and it is mainly town driving that I do. I'm coming from a 170bhp Astra 2.0 turbo and have test drove the 170 bhp tdi and it felt as quick if not quicker than my astra, but am unsure if the diesel would be the right choice for me.

Im guessing the TDI does around 35mpg around town compared to 25 - 29 mpg in the tsi, does anyone know roughly what that equates to in £££'s spent per month. I think I fill up around 3 times a month at the moment in the astra.

Cheers

Buy the Tsi you don't do anywhere near enough miles to warrant buying the Tdi.

I drive around 35,000 a year so the 170Tdi is perfect for me if you do 7-8K a year buy the petrol.
If you see S9 CTC driving around give us a wave I do 40,000 miles a year it gets lonely out there

Based on Official combined figures, which you won't achieve but it's the fairest way to compare. I would add at least 10-15% on the costs.

Model / Miles Per week / mpg x ltr per gal x price per ltr = weekly spend

2.0 R 265 / 250 / 34.9 x 4.55 x £1.30 = £42.37 p/w or 13,000 Mpa @ £2203.24 (£2372.78 V-Power)
2.0 TSI 210 / 250 / 38.2 x 4.55 x £1.30 = £38.71 p/w or 13,000 Mpa @ £2012.92
1.4 TSI 160 / 250 / 42.8 x 4.55 x £1.30 = £34.55 p/w or 13,000 Mpa @ £1796.60
1.4 TSI 122 / 250 / 44.1 x 4.55 x £1.30 = £33.53 p/w or 13,000 Mpa @ £1743.56
2.0 TDI 170 / 250 / 53.3 x 4.55 x £1.35 = £28.81 p/w or 13,000 Mpa @ £1498.12
2.0 TDI 140 / 250 / 62.8 x 4.55 x £1.35 = £24.45 p/w or 13,000 Mpa @ £1271.40

All manual figures. God i must be bored, could be driving the R right now :D

Based on your 8000 miles per year i reckon the 2.0 TSI 210 will cost £316.80 more a year in fuel than the 2.0 TDI 170.

Thanks for them figures and taking the time to work them out, think im pretty much settled on an 'R' now as i spend exactly the same amount on fuel on my astra as I would do on an R (averaging 25mpg around town in astra)

No problem, official combined figure for the Astra is 31 mpg so Roc R should be marginally better on fuel, 2.0 TSi more so.

The petrol is insurance group 32
The Diesel is insurance group 24

So factor in higher insurance premiums for the petrol. Also consider how long you will have the car for and think of what in might be worth when you come to sell. I just part exchanged a 10 year old BMW 330Ci and it was only worth peanuts because it was petrol and in a high insurance and tax group.

Using the Golf GT as an example (because there are no 3 year old TDi170's) Parkers Web site shows the following:-

2009 Golf 3dr Tdi (140) GT is now worth £12,140 as part exchange from an original price of £18,648 (loss of £6508)
2009 Golf 3dr 1.4 TSI GT (160) is now worth £10,765 as part exchange from an original price of £18,012 (loss of £7247)

Petrol Scirocco second hand values may hold up slightly better than Golf's because it’s a bit sportier and a bit less practical so perhaps running costs factor less in the purchase decision.

I just got a TDi 170 and am very happy with it and I’m confident it isn’t going to burn me in 3 years time when I change it.

On the other hand just take a test drive in both and see which you like better and get that one. Take less expensive holidays to cover the extra cost of running a petrol, either way it probably isnt going to break you.

Also, If you don't do the miles, you may well run into issues with the TDI's DPF filter.
