Does the 2009 200PS 2.0 TSI have a timing belt or a chain?

Post by 00HVB »

I can't seem to find as concrete answer. Everywhere i read i get conflicting info.

As far as i can work out the Scirocco 2.0 TSI 200bhp is the EA888 engine, with a chain, not a belt.

Does that mean i don't need the dreaded cam belt service?

Belts are on the Diesels & the R. The rest...... 1.4TSi's & 2.0ltr TSi are chains. VW regard the chains as fit and forget but chain guides & tensioners in earlier engines is where problems occur. Time will tell on these newer engine designs.

Belts on DIesels
> MY2009 - 110,000 miles (180,000Km)
MY2010 > - 125,000 miles (200,000Km)

Belt on R
All - 110,000 miles (180,000Km)

Chains - infinite but other VW engines, history shows 150,000 miles is a safe point (240,000Km) for the chain itself, ie stretching rather than snapping.

thanks for the swift response.

How would you know if the chain has stretched?..

I'm really glad I Dnt have to worry about an expensive belt change tho :D

First warning will most likely be irratic engine running with the diagnostics showing the fault associated with the Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) and engine speed sensor (G28). As the engine camshaft and crank will loose synchronisation.

The engine will go into Limp Home Mode to protect itself.... ie, down on power and rpm limited, usually somewhere in the region of 4,500 - 5,500rpm. Also the engine warning lamp will be on in the dash dial.

I've seen chains that have stretched one complete link in length. They came from a 175,000 ish engine. In the past its more the chain guides or hydraulic tensioners that give up first.

in addition to the above, stretched chains will also rattle a little. I know in the V6, 3.2 as used in my r32, there were a few cases of chains stretching at around 60k miles but there are many that have covered over 100k miles without any issues.
