What do you guys think about the transmission options.? What's better dsg or manual. I have only driven manual, but I think I would enjoy a dsg. What's your opinion guys?

Been drive my scirocco with dsg now for 11K miles and love it around town it ace in traffic and when you want to play just use the paddles!!

I also have run DSG for the past 2.5 years, having all manual previously. i'd agree with Mickwillow on the versatility, however I do sometimes yearn for the feel of a stick in my left hand

DSG every time for me.
I'm on my 3rd VW with DSG,and it completely changed my view of auto's.As already said you get the best of both worlds,and with paddles better again.

I've always had manual cars (having tried slushboxes which I hate) but DSG is a whole new world. Nothing like a slushbox and more like a manual with an automatic clutch, wonderful wonderful device. I'm now a DSG junkie although I do miss double-declutching tunes on country roads. I can't imagine having a Scirocco without it now, it'd just be a lesser car to me.

My DSG is my third automatic car, but honestly you cannot compare it to my others. So slick so fast. Kickdown is brilliant and the twisty Welsh mountain roads are real fun with the paddles. Don't think I'll ever go back to a manual. Don't think my wife will let me.

Totally agree with everyone above. I got a good deal on my car and so DSG wasn't a choice it's just what the car had. And for the first couple of weeks I was unsure, but after that I just loved it and still do. I will always get DSG from now on. Totally brilliant!

My uncle drives a standard golf 140 tdi dsg mk5, and the gear change in that is so smooth and still seems a fast car

I drive a manual but my wife's Polo has DSG. I do like it a lot, my only bugbear with it is going up hills where it wants to change another cog down (than is really necessary).

Likewise going down hill, the box changes down lower than I would like so I have to override it in these instances.

Best I think to operate it in 'manual' in these situations. To summarise, I'm fond of it, but not totally converted - yet!

I choose to go with a manual on mine, a bit worried over having too many complicated things on the car and as I plan on owning the car for some time, I was just worried what would happen if the DSG would go nuts on me. =P

Manual for me too. Dsg wasn't available when i got mine which is one reason but i also test drove the 2.0 with dsg and while i thought it was great for normal driving i really felt it missed that interaction for when you wanted a bit of fun. I also wouldn't have got the 7 speed dsg with the 1.4 as it seems a little weaker than the manual and so i'd have worried i'd break it! :-)

Correct, you do get flappy paddles with DSG, you can override the gearbox using the paddles (when in auto 'D') or you can go into manual operation by shifting the gear lever to the left and use the paddles all the time, or the gear lever itself, forward for up and back for downshift. (tiptronic). Personally I think the paddles are more fun.

I frequently do override the box, especially on hills as tends to use a lower gear than you would normally, that is my only slight irritation with it, but it's hardly a problem.

paddles are only standard on the gt trim, you need the multifunction steering wheel on other trim to get them iirc
the 1.4 122 is not available in dsg in the uk & the 1.4 160 dsg is the 7 speed dsg box not the 6 speed found in 2.0 engines

Manual for me, a friend as dsg thought it was fantrastic till it went wrong. apparently VW quoted him £5000 to sort it out at first.

Personally, even though i have DSG, I would choose manual every time. Prefer the control esp. low speed and reversing stuff.

Enjoyed DSG on my R32 for 5 years but have manual in the Rocco.

Drive both, choose which one you like the best and buy that one...simples. Everyone elses opinion, including mine, is irrelevant.
