Ignition problem with manic windows

Post by gibbsy »

This has happened twice now. When I put the key into the ignition and try to start the engine the key will not move but the windows are going up and down like a pair of maniacs, they drop to the normal door opening position very very quickly. I have to remove the key and get out of the car, lock it, then try again and all is well. Both times it was raining and was when I returned to the car after an initial drive.

Try wiggling the steering wheel as you turn the key to make sure the steering lock is off.

Thanks all, think I'll ring the dealers tomorrow. Anyone know if it's a long job or a couple of hours in the company of a courtesy Polo. :grumpy:

My current Scirocco did this and was diagnosed as a known problem over the phone. My dealer ordered the part and when it arrived i went in and was back out less than an hour later sorted.Hardly long enough to have coffee and a prod around the cars in the showroom.
That was nearly 2 years ago and problem has never returned.
IF IT'S NOT BROKEN
I'VE NOT TOUCHED IT YET !!

This is what it sounds like to me too - as the key will not move. I've had this myself several times in the early days.
Although ignition system faults are well known. Just make sure its not a steering lock issue first.

This happened to me when I first got the car but stopped happening after a while, almost as if we'd got to know each other better. I have no idea if I now do something different or if the car somehow adjusted itself but it never ever happens now.

Had it as well and gone away. Well most of the time.....

Think its how you pull the key out.
I've got into the habit of rotating the key fully off before attempting the pull it out of the lock.
If I do it rotating and pulling out in the last part of the turn to OFF, the windows sometimes jiggle.

as mentioned already, mine does that when steering lock is on, or steering is sat just at the brink of being on lock, e.g. when you turn ignition off and move the wheel just a tad before getting out, not enough to lock it tho. makes me jump without fail every time!!
