Teardrop wipe for wipers

Post by Sootchucker »

Now that Winter suddenly decended on us yesterday, I'm obviously using my wipers and screen washers more than during the "summer" :D (remember that ?) time

I've just noticed that unlike my MK5 Golf that preceeded the Scirocco, there doesn't appear to be a teardrop wipe for the wipers ? On the golf, if I used the washers, the wipers would sweep 3 times, then after about 5 or so seconds, would do a final wipe to clear the dribbles - the scirocco doesn't do that. Is that the same with everyone esles ? (mines an April 2011 build BTW).

I've also noticed that the sweeping of the rear window when you engage reverse only works if the wipers are off the auto setting (i.e. on fixed speed 1 or 2) but doesn't engage if the wipers are on auto ? What's going on there then ?

Can't see anything in VCDS to enable any of these ?

Hmmm, I have the latest revisions of VCDS on the netbook, but it seems the washer sub part of the [09] control module is not mapped yet, as VCDS reports no coding exists yet for this module in long coder?

If I go into the [09] module itself, then towards the end, there are some bytes controlling the washers in there but only for the rear screen.

I have the options for

Rear washer teardrop - set to active

Rear washer teardrop with wipers in full mode - active

Rear washer teardrop with wipers in intermediate - active.

I guess this means the rear teardrop only functions when the wipers are in either full mode or intermittent (which BTW the car doesnt have), but nothing about the Auto position. I tried it again tonight (just to make sure I wasn't going mad), and with my wipers set to auto, engaging reverse does nothing. However, as soon as I flick them to speeds 1 or 2, it sweeps immediately.

Also, there doesn't appear to be any bytes for the front wiper teardrop function ?

Any ideas ( I can post a scan later on if required)

The rear wiper does work in front Auto mode (or at least it does on mine) but it doesn't necessarily come on as soon as you engage reverse. I'm not entirely sure how it works but I suspect that the rear wiper only sweeps when you are in reverse and the front wipers perform a wipe at the same time.
Now as this tends to be an intermitant wipe and you may only be in reverse for a few moments the chances of the two coinciding are probably a bit remote. Also if you are reversing for any reasonable distance then all the rain is falling on the rear window so the front screen will not need wiping :shrug:

Yes, this concurs with my experience too, in auto mode I only get a rear wipe on reverse when the front wipers are active. Some sort of short term memory would have been useful, e.g. if auto/intermittent wipe had been active during the previous minute, then perform a rear wipe on reverse.

I suppose it's like all these actively ergonomic features, we could easily live without them but they are there and we get a bit disappointed when they can't keep up with the real world.

My old MG had a current leakage to the rear wiper when the front wipers were on intermittent mode. Very gradually, while the front wipers were on, the rear wiper would nudge up by very small amounts until after about 10 minutes it would perform a single wipe. And then it would start again. This was great on long runs in the rain as spray would build up on the rear screen and normally you would have to manually operate the rear wiper every now and then.

Sorry chaps, was out all day on business yesterday so didn't get chance to post my scan as promised.

As a few of you have mentioned, it does seem that rear wiper does work in Auto mode, but ONLY when the front wipers are actually doing a sweep themselves. I proved this today as it was pouring down and the auto wipers were in continuous mode, as soon as reverse was engaged on the DSG, the rear wuper swept. Seems to be different from the Golf, as the rear wiper on this swept as soon as reverse was engaged, (with the wiper stalk in Auto or standard positions 1 or 2), regardless of whether the front wipers were idle or not ?

Any way here the scan as promised.

Still can't find a way of getting front wiper teardrop wipe though ?

You are going to have to do it the long handed way...........

009795 ------> 009F95
(Bit pattern 10000111 ----> 10001111)

Work providing the controller firmware will support it.
