Rust and mould!

Post by Deacon »

Hello,

I've noticed a few rusty bolts on my Scirocco - the ones holding the boot strusts to the car body and the ones on top of the suspension turrets under the bonnet - has anyone else got this and should I be taking it back to the dealer? I also noticed that there appears to be some sort of white mould on the fire wall on the passenger side of the engine bay - again has anyone else got this and is it worth a mention to the dealer? I've also got a bit of a dash board rattle that sounds like it's coming from where the dash meets the windscreen but I'll wait and see if this gets better/worse before getting the dealer to look as in every other car I've had if the dealer 'fixes' one rattle about 27 others appear!

I've attached some pictures, all thoughts and comments welcome.

My suspension turret bolts look just like the pictures of yours.

I will check out other peoples at meet tomorrow. Like you say though I don't like it once the dealers start taking things to bits......

I'd thought that but it also seems to happen when the wipers are in use so made me wonder if it was something else?

Haven't taken it yet as I hate letting dealers touch my cars - they always come back with more problems than they went in with. I have heard something about a recall for the boot struts and rusty bolts though. I noticed when cleaning the 'roc the other week that some of the bolts on the edge of the door were also starting to show signs of rust.

Not good mate, I wouldn't be pleased with a £20K car and this happening in six months. Those are components are definitely substandard.

When I first looked at a Scirocco in the dealers on the launch weekend, I was shocked to find no protection. The sales peeps assured me that the car didn't need Waxoyl etc anymore. I'm definitely applying extra sealant in key places when mine arrives.

The suspension turrets on mine look exactly the same! The bolts on the boot lid are not as bad as yours but are headed in the same direction... This really sucks, I really like my rocco, but you have to wonder what we aren't seeing. What happens when In 3 years the paint starts bubbling up or something of the sort :? I mean many of us are having wiper problems, the whistling sound on the 1.4 TSI, mine has already started rattling. I want to keep it for a few years but I'm not so sure anymore  I don't know about you but I would have gladly paid an extra 1-2k euros to get a car that VW didn't save money on...

Just had an e-mail discussion with my dealer about the boot dampeners and rust etc..... they checked my chassis number and the issue seems to not be on the car that we are getting on the 3rd September......build week, I think, was 29 /30...

That's good news for me... ..but lets see what happenes after a few months.....

Dealer is checking my suspension turrets bolts tomorrow morning. They are aware of the boot strut bolts but not the suspension. The boot strut problem only affects som ecars within certain chasis numbers.
Hopefully this is the only problem as I wanted to keep the car for quite a few years.

Jesus !!
You lot need to get out more.
It is just surface rust. Mine has this too. I put a spot of Black touch up paint onto the rear struts 4 or 5 months ago and guess what... NO MORE SURFACE RUST. It hardly warrants a visit back to the dealer does it ???
IF IT'S NOT BROKEN
I'VE NOT TOUCHED IT YET !!

I can see your point, but I guess some of us don't expect to see this kind of thing on a so say "quality" product which we have spent a lot of our hard earned cash on.

Dealer has seen the bolts. The guy checked a new scirocco and it had surface rust a well. He said it was poor and that he thinks that they should be capped. he's checking with VW and looking to see if any of the other VW's have caps that would fit a scirocco. He said if they did they would clean them up, grease them, and cap them.

It might seem like some people are overdoing it with the complaining and I realize this sort of rust won't probably cause any real damage anytime soon... But its quite discouraging that my brand new car already has rusty parts on it and my dad's old 1995 Volvo barely has any!!! VW cut corners and I'm afraid it wasn't just the bolts!

I've got mine jacked up in the garage just now to do some waxoyling of the suspension and general bits underneath and couldnt help notice the amount of fine gravel caught between the front wheel arch liner and the inside of the wing, I was considering removing the liner and giving the inside of the wing a waxoyl, but then thought that this fine gravel will just rub through it and then start chewing away at the paint, so I'd be wasting my time. Time will tell what damage this may do, but I hope none because I was going to keep this car along time and dont want rusty wings in 5 years! Any rusty bolts I find around the doors and bonnet etc I tend to squirt a wee bit of white spray greae on, nice and neat, and stops them rusting.

Good News for all those concerned about the boot strut bolts.
(note the irony seeing as i had a pop about everyone moaning about a tiny bit of surface rust !!)
Mine went in for it's first sevice yesterday and VW have issued a recall notice to replace the surface rusted bolts on the tailgate.
To be honest. The new ones look exactly the same to me . But time will tell i suppose.
