Heya guys, in a few weeks in planning on driving to Italy with my R. did a few long runs over the weekend to average out the cost and project a MPG figure. To be honest my results impressed me greatly. bare in mind that the car had myself and a passenger in it, it managed to do 230 miles on half a tank, and we werent ambling around either
i couldnt beleive that it would do over 500 miles on a tank (projected)!! my dads C180Kompressor only ever managed 400miles! has anyone else seen exception range on thier R's???
has engine technology really moved on so much in recent years? the car has 265ps and im shocked that it manages so well on it fuel consumption. my old R32 was aweful on mpg, but i didnt buy that reason lol
Mine has given me 430 miles on a full tank but that was stuck in traffic averaging 45MPH. I mostly get around 28mpg with a mixture of driving styles and between 280-330 miles. I like the loud pedal to much
I average around 3k per month and do a lot of medium/long runs for work and whilst it took me a long time to be disciplined I can easily average 40mpg if I drive sensibly and stay in comfort and D mode. I do hump it when driving around town but thats the whole point of the car - its an excellent cruiser on the motorway but similarly good around town.
i really think that VW have made a technical marvel with this car. i still cant get over how comfortable, refined and well built for the price. AND it looks amazing, sounds awesome, the interior is a very good, and its effing fast. i dont know of any other manufacturer that can offer such a good balance. the ACC actually does something when u press it. even my old mum, who has driven mercs all her life said she was amazed how comfortbale she was in the back and that it sat 4 people in the same comfort as her merc.
I love the loud pedal too!! this car is like distant thunder at 2500rpm then you drop a cog and its screaming its way down a country road
Its one of the most fuel-effective sportscars...In fact MPG rates increase through engine mileage.. (They are even lower with a DSG gearbox and 18''s)...
Whatsoever you should be aware of the fact that Direct Injection Engines shouldnt be run in low rpms (<3000) for long periods of time, since there is a major problem with carbon buildup....

Interesting. Please elaborate.
Does this mean dropping down a couple of gears for a while on long motorway runs ?
yes,it seems to be healthier for the motor to be run at >3.000 rpm.Its the architecture of DI that causes that problem, thats why the new audi-vw 1.8 engine uses a combination of DI and Indirect injection : atomized fuel is used to "clean up" the valves before the air-fuel mixture enters the combustion chamber.
Ok, I might be mistaken and would need to check but Im pretty sure that on long runs I'm always between 3.25 and 3.5 - its not possible of going below 3000 even if in temporary roadworks, but I will note it just in case and pop it into 5 and leave it there in manual.
I cannot agree more Dan this car is technologically amazing a genuine balance between racking up the miles and yet still putting type-r's, megane sports, tt's and focus ST's to shame - love the noise when its warmed up, purring around town is quality.
So i should really do a running in period then?? my dealer told me the engines get run in at the factory??
Panhandle, the interiors and build quality of the Ford and Renualt are a joke in comparison to this. plus the scirocco looks miles better and is a proper head turner. i was driving up sloane street in central london last nite and it looked awesome in the city lights
The whole running in debate is a well trodden on this and many other sites so if you do a search you will find pages of conflicting opinions - I must confess I did a mixture of journeys in mine and never consistently spanked it from cold - for me personally as long as the car is warmed up nicely then getting it red lining is fine - just dont hop into your car and then thrash it in S.
Yes sounds wicked - try and go past those reflective shop windows or gym frontages which are like big mirrors, the R looks mint - Even I forget sometimes just how tasty it is.
