I certainly wouldn't advocate R888's as a year round tyre for everyday use.

I used to run them on my Elise, which did see the track a fair bit, for track work they're great and dry road use, to be honest in the wet they're actually pretty good as they heat up well, but standing water is lethal and snow is a complete joke!

I personally would be looking at the Conti's as they always seem to work well in all conditions.

Sorry to jump off topic a little, but a quick question. As the Roc's now ship from VW with self sealing tyres (as I understand it either Pirelli or Continental ?), I assume when it comes time to replace, you don't have to replace them with self sealing again ?

I've had a lot of good experience over the last few years of GY F1 asymetricals, so would probably look towards them (or a similar replacment) in a couple of years when the new ones need replacing. But could this be done or should you stick to the same technology (read more expensive) that VW fit as standard ?

Sootchucker: No obligation to replace with the same, although if you get a puncture you're right up a certain creek without a paddle! Unless you buy a space saver wheel (assuming VW haven't changed the floorpan (i'm sure some countries will still have them as standard). The Germans can buy one separately for about 55 Euros.

Maisbitt; I believe you still get a space saver regardless of what tyres are fitted.
It was only the R that came with a can of tyre foam initially (revised to include space saver in one round of model changes)

Trix, thanks. Thanks our Cocker Spaniel, Jake when he was 8 weeks old ( now over 10 years old).

Lost his sister a couple of years ago, used to be insperable.

Also if you specify 19" wheels normal tyres will be fitted instead of self sealing.

I think you also lose the tyre pressure monitor if 19" are specified as well, from the way I read the brochure

Trix: My dealer advised at time of ordering my new one that you lose the spacesaver with self seal tyres, but after just looking at the most recent brochure, it would appear you still get the spacesaver. Dealers eh? Obviously not as obsessive as us about the products they sell! :p Unless the brochure is wrong (wouldn''t be the first time).

Trix: I did think the dealer was telling the truth as in Germany you now have to buy your spacesaver, should you want one (about 55 Euros).

Yep, getting a 170TDI (which was annoyingly announced about a month after I got my current Roc), different colour (Rising Blue and 30 more horses, but otherwise the same (except MY2010/11 updates added).

I'll need to two new front ones soon - however a good place to start is ADAC and if your Germany isn't up to it here is a direct link.

No you still get TPMS with 19"'s.. I assume the brochure is misprinted or that cars which do not normally get TPMS as standard will not gain it by specifying 19"'s.

I've got 19"'s on my R and TPMS but TPMS is standard on R's.

It's clear that TPMS is standard on the R but there is a note in the brochure that when you spec. 19" alloys on the GT it says 19" wheels / tyres in lieu fof tyre pressure monitor and self sealing tyres.

There is some coding in the ABS controller for the wheel diameters 16's to 18's for which the standard bit setting covers. 19's & above will be outside this on the GT, unless adjusted.

I've just got a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3's on. They offer much more grip than my old Continental Sport Contact 2's.

Yep, I replaced replaced four Potenza RE050,

Less noise
Better comfort
Possibly better MPG
Equal dry grip
Possbily better wet grip (but un-fair comparison 2mm versus 6mm)

Goatboy - so have I, my dealer was wrong. :shake:

It seemed plausible at the time that VW would lose the space saver and hoy in a tin of tyreweld instead, they'll do anything to shave a few quid off costs and probably put the list price up at the same time too.
