Changing Gear Knobs

Post by Strat »

Now then,

Quick question really, but would the Audi TT gearknob fit in the Scirocco?

Is it a complex change?

Any idea how much something like that is?

Never like the R manual knob, much prefer the TT one with the aluminium on it, very nice to touch :D

Thoughts? Alternatives?

Changeing is really easy. The gaitor surround unclips then and pulls up then there is a retaining ring around the knob which needs to be loosend with pliers then old knob and gaitor can be removed. Fitting is just the same again but retaining ring is squeezed clise this time gaitor slides down then clips in place. Took me about 15 minutes all in to do mine

Yes Shaun, looks similar, altough that one looks quick long, the one in my mum's car is quite stubby and short which is what id prefer, although could of course be the pics etc.

Thanks Deacon!

strat: you'll have to remove TT knob from TT gaiter, as the TT's one is round whereas the Roc's one is squarish. TT Knob can be separated from gaiter and clipped onto Roc's gaiter.

Roc's gear lever shaft will probably be longer than the TT's so a TT gearknob may look longer in a Roc.

I just went the opposite way to Strat and bought a new R knob off ebay from someone in Portugal (who probably lifted it from the production line in Palmela. Much prefer the look and feel of the R one to the "ball on a stick" version on all other variants and pretty much every mid-range manual VW model, feels much more ergonomic to me and the black gloss on it fits nicely with the gloss on the climate control and RCD unit. Paid £75 + £15 delivery (£15! the package arrived with 6.25 euros paid delivery - the robbers!), all in was the cheapest I could find on ebay.

Will take quite a bit of force to remove knob from gaiter for Strat, I considered doing this for the Roc with my R knob so I kept the original gaiter, I decided against it and unclipped the gaiter base from the Roc one so I had the original chrome base surround. It means that I have the R knob and R gaiter with silver stitching instead of black, on the chrome base of the original gaiter - I can live with the stitching mismatch between the gaiter and the handbrake lever.

Can you PM a link to the manual R knob please mate. Would really like to replace my manual standard one (not sure if GT one is different even to standard, but it's one thing I don't like in my car!)

Ryy: The listing ended yesterday, but only 3 of 10 were sold, so no doubt they'll be getting relisted again very shortly - the seller was Portuguese with ebay name "princoxl", also selling multi-function steering wheels.

He was the cheapest on ebay global at £75+£15 del (£90 total). If you can't wait for him to list again (and assume his prices don't go up), the next cheapest is £95 inc delivery, another Portuguese seller, link:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-VI-6-SCIR ... 1c1cc06af9" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It says "buy now" at £95 or "make me an offer" - perhaps you could email the seller and ask them to match Princoxl's price inc delivery of £90? Beyond these 2 Portuguese sellers, the price shoots up to £115 + £7 delivery.

Princoxl's page did warn you that you may be liable to tax/duty loadings, but if you're UK/EU they can't slap VAT/Duty on you because it's been paid locally (or so they assume) - can't see VAT having been paid if it has been twoc'd from the production line! :p

Princoxl's communication was non existant when asking for tracking details until I sent a 3rd email threatening a paypal dispute if it didn't arrive within 2 days beyond the stated delivery window as he'd been non responsive to my first 2 emails asking when it was posted and when I could expect to receive it (the "posted" tag hadn't been activated for the transaction in my personal ebay account).

The GT stick as fitted is standard for all Rocs except the R, and is standard on most Tiguan, Golf and Passat variants (maybe more car models too).

Thanks for that maisbitt. Seems it's missing the silver trim, dunno if that'd make much difference in the car, but still. I read they're easy to fit, will have to dig those up. It's also about if I really want it. I've seen on MSE website a big thing that we all know, but really sounded out the whole do i really need it thing. - Not as bad as getting a card yet though... http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/money-mantras" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; lol.

Ryy: The silver trim as in the chrome bezel around the gaiter base? I used the one off the stock gearstick, the gaiter skirt easily clips out of the base that comes with the R gearstick (just a few locking tabs you unclip), as I didn't want the black metal bezel that the R stick comes with. It's a 30 second job to unclip the gaiter base from each gear knob and swap them over.

You don't "Need" it, but you do want it - how much do you want it? It looks and feels a lot nicer than stock.
