RCD 510 with Iphone

Post by anthvipergreen »

Hi Guys,
I am new here and had a look around for similar post, so please forgive me if I am bringing up the same post (which I am sure other will have asked).

I have just bought a 11` plate Viper Green 1.4 122TSI direct from VW. Had it roughly a month and a half. Generally love it think its a great car. Im 22 so my friends think I am the dogs b with it!

One thing which I am looking at is I currently the phone button on the RCD 510. All it does is mute? A little confusing although I came to the conclusion that It may be functionality which I dont have switched on.

In short, is there anyway which this can be changed so I can use my phone for with the head unit for calls etc or is it just a case of it always going to be like that on this model?

Are there any alternatives I can purchase or cheaper methods?

I appreciate any help with this & look forward to helping other in the future.

Hiya

yes the phone button does just mute. to have it do anything else, open up the phone menu so you can take calls in your car, you need a bluetooth kit installed - this is not standard equipment.
options in terms of bluetooth kits is retrofit the VW factory bluetooth kit, Fiscon or Parrot, people are guaranteed to pop along & advise on these various options shortly..

Go with the Fiscon. Intergrates completely with the RCD510 and is really easy to install. Works 100% with an iPhone.

+1 here for the Fiscon, very happy customer here.. Other than a mic at the top of the window, you wouldn't know it isn't a factory installed/original kit.. Love it!

Thanks guys all very helpful. I wonder whether instead of spending a couple of hundred on just the phone I would be better buying the RNS 510 which has other features.

However I am assuming that even if I do get that system installed I will still need a hands free system such as Fiscon on top of the RNS?

I am also running on the assumption that the RNS 510 can be installed after an RCD 510 has previously been in there.

Whilst there's been a couple of folk in favour of Fiscon, I'd say that now that VW have brought out a proper Bluetooth solution, instead of the RSAP only version, the OEM one is better. I had a Fiscon unit installed and have since replaced with VW OEM, and the integration is much better with the OEM (as you'd expect).

The only downside is that you need to fit the OEM mic in the space above the interior lights and run cables above the head liner then down the A-pillar, whereas the default mic for Fiscon is one that clips onto the A-pillar.

In the bad old days, the Fiscon unit was streets ahead in terms of compatibility (ie worked with non-RSAP phones) but this is all changed now.

Hi,

Sorry to dig up this thread, but I'm in exactly the same boat as the OP.

I took delivery of my new 2011 'Rocco last week, and the voice control button on the MF steering wheel only seems to MUTE the RCD510. No prompt for voice command. I paid for factory fitted Bluetooth (which works perfect otherwise) which I presumed included voice control.

On our 2010(60) Toureg, the exact same button correctly initiates voice control, however the Touareg doesn't have Bluetooth, but has sat-nav instead (not sure what model HU is in the Touregs, so I'm not sure whether it equates to the RNS510s in the 'Roccos and Golfs, etc.?). But this rules out Bluetooth being a requirement for the voice control feature...

I've been to Warrington VW with car at the weekend at they couldn't make any sense of it. They advised me to book it in for them to have a look at in more detail! :-(

Does anyone know why this might be happening? Or is this expected behavior for the RCD510 and something you get as a feature on the RNS510?

Cheers,

Joe

Hi Joe
Your problem isn't really the same as anth's as he didn't have the Bluetooth installed therefore in that instance the button does only mute.
Your issue is more http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... =25&t=8344" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; the button has not been coded in correctly. not terribly surprised warrington couldn't work it out based on previous comments about their aftersales, perhaps take it into another dealer near by?

Hmm, so you think it _should_ be working then, even though I've not got the RNS HU? (The link you kindly provided is regarding an RNS HU)

Out of interest, why do you think our Touareg has the voice control, as it doesn't have Bluetooth, but instead what looks to be an equivalent of the RNS sat-nav?

Warrington are quite rubbish to be honest, from past experience. Altrincham have proved to be a little more helpful, so I might try and book it in there instead.

Cheers,

Joe
