Sudden Poor Fuel Economy?

Just been up north to visit my folks for a couple of weeks halfway on the M6 i was returning a steady 62mpg
When i got to mum it was lots of short journeys so averaged anything between mid 30's to low 40's which is what id expect

My partners driving style is a lot smoother than mine and she allways gets better consumption,on returning she drove back but still could not better 52 mpg on extra urban (constant motorway cruising 180 non stop miles)

we then went from Wilts to Bristol on Saturday weve done this same route plenty of times achieving easily 57-59mpg again could only get 51 max

When we first got the car in December we managed 58mpg from Mums to here with just 500 miles on the clock

As predicted by soo many on here as we went past 3k on clock we started to see much better fuel economy

Thing is its now approaching 5k and staring to get worse than when it was new

The correct tire pressures are fine but one thing i did notice in the service book it states in certain circumstances of types of diesel fuel used the filter needs changing at 5k

i thought this might refer to other countries but not too sure now?

Before anybody suggests the particulate filter despite doing town duties for a couple of weeks i have given it some beans on the motorway a few junctions here and there to keep that clear and clean

Any Suggestions?

Anybody had similar experiences with their 2.0 TDI 140 ?

I had the same engine in my last Audi A3 with dsg and sometimes had blips in fuel economy. It may be poor quality fuel or if you have noticed its been a bit windy over the last few days i dont think the Scirooco handles it well so maybe a bit of wind resistance will effect you.

Yes, I agree with chrisyboyc here, could be factors such as driving into a headwind, having the car fully loaded, full tank of fuel, AC switched on all being factors. Would not expect it to affect the consumption as much as you suggest though. You may find it will suddenly improve again with no real explanation.

Still debating within myself whether to get a Diesel next. I get 31/32 max with my trek to work and back. I hear about all this if you do 15k miles etc it's worth it blah blah, but use Tesco's Momentum anyway, so I'm paying 138p which isn't too far behind diesel right now. I would agree to go back OT that wind could do it. I drive past some trucks and get a mad blast of wind and the roc doesn't like it at all.

Yes, 39mpg for a TDI is pretty poor, That is average for me but I do have the petrol TSI. Just as a comparison, I cycle to work, and boy do I know it when there is a headwind, saps your energy big time, very demoralising!

Same sort of thing driving into a headwind, you just squeeze the throttle that bit more to maintain speed and that will kill your mpg.

.....and as we all know, those 160/1.4's cut through the crosswinds and headwinds much better than those hateful diesels

Unless there is something wrong with the engine, to do a 70mph cruise and only get 39mpg from a diesel due to headwind, that situation won't improve with a TSI, you'd probably get 25mpg in the same situation with a 1.4TSI/160.

Have you checked your intakes for leaves/debris etc incase the engine is a little low on air?

With Joloke's 140TDI, mid 30's to low 40's (mpg) seems very low around the doors unless you're stuck in traffic for most of the journey. Even on a 3 or 4 mile journey, I average about 47mpg. Get it back to the dealership for a look, you might have an issue such as a leaking injector seal.

How quick is your motorway cruise? If you're cruising at 85mph then 52mpg is to be expected (with no traffic hold-ups). Weather plays a noticeable part. Managed 59mpg average on a 75-80mph cruise for 350 miles with some traffic for the last 20 miles on a hot day, and using aircon for 1/2 the journey. Same journey 2 days later, 10C colder and no aircon use, no traffic at all, same speeds etc and I got 56mpg ave.

A lot of people start putting their foot down a lot more after everything has run in and see their economy drop. Assuming your driving style doesn't change, you should see modest gains up to 20k miles, and 10% improvement on economy in the summer vs the winter.

I dont think thats fair the Scirocco Diesel is a great car

In fact most diesels are great

Theres so many performance cars available now with as many diesel units as petrol to say diesels are hateful is a bit uncalled for

besides if you get a 140 diesel it isnt much slower and gives you around another 10mpg on the consumption figures

and the 170tdi is faster than the 1.4 160 and still gives around 8 mpg more per gallon than the 1.4 160

After such dissapointing Fuel Economy on the way back from up North my other half took the Roc to the station and back this morning about 8 Miles and ive just taken it out for a Quick Blast around the lanes about 10 miles so from cold with a few hours between its covered just 18miles and is now reading 52mpg

Bonkers car im begining to wonder if it likes the number 52 and has forgotten how to count past it

52mpg is great for such a short journey but i am begining to wonder if the MFD has got an attatchment to the number 52

I'm not changing what I have now at all, only had it 7 months. I mean for next car. I'm definitely wanting an A5 / S5. Depends on my money situation, but I'm thinking A5 as I want to buy a house at some point (jesus, that's a trial and error thing now indeed). But for both (A5 and house), I'm looking at 2 - 3 years.

Also environmental factors like temperature and pressure can make a huge difference!
