if i was to .....
Good morning scirocco central Hope everyone is ready for another week of roc driving festivities!
The reason i am sooo cheerful on a Monday morning? simple..... It’s mod time!
I am going to be in mosts eyes very amateurish about it, I have about £500 or so to blow and I pretty much have my heart set on a remap, looked on the REVO site and I will have to travel cross country to Edinburgh to get this done but I’m good with that, just more driving time
Before i take the plunge i was just curious to see what you guys though was the best way to spend around about £500 give or take on improving the performance, if im overlooking something and going with the 'jeremy clarkson power' approach as i don’t really have a massive knowledge of cars unfortunately
Also if anyone has their car on finance from the dealership will this affect the warranty or servicing?

A remap is a good choice, it wont really affect servicing but you might want to get the oil changed more often as a precaution, it may affect your warranty if they know its on the car and you have an issue that they deem to be because of the remap , oh dont forget insurance increases too.

Is that £500 spare after you pay the extra to the insurance company? You shouldn't risk not telling the insurance company (i'm not assuming you won't - just want to point out the pitfalls of not doing so) - they will do anything and everything they can to avoid a payout, and that includes going over your car with a fine-toothed comb if you have a prang. If you've had a remap or any other performance mod, they'll find you out if you're not upfront with them.

Yeah thats after i tell the insurance company, I can see them bumping it up by quite a bit im planning for them in increase by around £500? If it comes under that them I will be very tempted to add a miltek exaust though i really just want something thats going to very very nippy and giving it a nice sound is just an added bonus, kinda superficial I know But anyways what does £500 or so get you these days in performance modifications?

best to double check your current insurer will cover you with the remap first so you're not in the position that you have to change companies part way through the year or something, but if thats ok'd then yes a remap will be your best bet for cost vs results.

I have a viezu remap + full VW diagnostic., now 195bhp, 235lbft, 310nm. Should of cost £350 inc vat, but they had a special for that month of £199 inc vat. So if you can find a Viezu dealer (wich there are many of) Check Viezu site to get dealer locations and see if they have a deal going on.

If a remap would cost you an extra £500 a year in insurance, shouldn't you have got gotten the 2.0TSI in the first place?
Power increases through unofficial means usually carry a disproportionate insurance penalty e.g. someone I know pays £180 a year extra to get his 140TDI GT insured after it was remapped to 170PS, but to have bought a 170TDI GT would have only cost him £30 a year more in insurance.

Plus peoples needs do change, budgets etc.... for me, i got the 1.4 as a company car as it's much cheaper in monthly tax than the 2.0, when remapped, the insurance doesn't go up, the tax doesn't go up but the car goes quicker.
In the above example, surely you are forgetting the extra up front cost of the 170 also? Yes the future resale may be higher for the faster car, but if the 140 is a Bluemotion, that may prove even more of an incentive.
These things aren't always black and white.

Scottmac: The original poster is paying his own insurance, he's expecting it to cost him £500 a year more to insure, your circumstances (company car) don't apply to him.
As for the 140/170 example, the person in question that I know has full NCD, pays £180 a year for extra insurance on a remapped 140 vs £30 more than untouched £140 for buying a 170 = £150 a year difference in insurance. He keeps the car 3 years generally and his remap cost him £350, so he pays out £800 over 3 years for the privilege of being remapped. The remap has very little value when left on the car. The difference in list price between the 140 and the 170 is £760, and you'll see 1/2 of that back come trade in time. So £760 now, getting £380 back (170) vs £800 now, possibly getting £200 back for your remap if you're very lucky (140 remap). No warranty worries either. Still seems like the 170 beats a remapped 140 over a typical 3 years ownership. Either way it was just an example to show how remap isn't always cost effective.
The 2.0TSI costs £3075 over the 1.4TSI and comes with about £1550 of equipement that you would need to spec on the 1.4. The original poster may find that if he bought a 2.0TSI, he might've only paid £100 or £150 more than an untouched 1.4TSI to insure per year, so would save £350-£400 per year on insurance, and would have no warranty worries. If someone buys a 1.4TSI and specs up all the GT equipment and pays £400 a year more for insurance on a remapped model, they will find themselves paying out the same amount for a 3 year ownership:-
3 x £400 insurance difference + £350 cost of remap +£1550 cost of GT equipment = £3100 vs £3075 cost extra of an untouched 2.0TSI.

Possible slightly higher residuals on the 1.4TSI basic car (due to economy considerations) would no doubt be outweighed by significantly lower retained value of the non standard equipment specced.
I'm just saying that for the Roc, buying an equivalently specced 1.4TSI and remapping it vs getting a 2.0TSI and running it for 3 years is sometimes a false economy, same story for buying and remapping a 140 vs 170TDI.

I agree with everything you've said - you reinforce my point that things aren't always black and white, fuel costs, insurance, spec requirements are all of note.
Plus lets be honest, not everyone declares a remap to an insurer as it is nigh on impossible for them to find out if it's been done or not.
But the 1.4 is definitely the sportiest model... it's a petrol to start

I think it's a pretty natural thing to want the next best thing. Get a 1.4TSI and you'll be wondering whether you could've gotten teh 2.0TSI, get one of them, and be wondering if you should've got an R etc.
With previous warranty claims for my past cars (the Roc has been by far my most reliable VW) i'd be too worried to risk my warranty on a remap, and insurance risk to cost just doesn't add up. I can see how you'd charge a lot more for a 2.0TSI than an R - the R has bigger brakes, but for the other variants with the same brake set-up, an increase in BHP to another equivalent higher model in the range shouldn't be any more of a risk.
These insurance companies must assume that someone with a remapped 1.4TSI/140TDI must be less of a responsible driver than someone with a 2.0TSI/170TDI even though they have similar levels of power.

maisbitt - i won't be bothering doing mine, but it is always interesting.... i'll just get a fun car alongside the Scirocco and that can be an enjoyable daily driver.
