38psi!!!

Even if you'd been driving it like an off white Astra Max van those figures seem rather high!!!

No idea on the warning light though... but i'd have your tyres somewhere between 30 and 32psi for a car the size of the Scirocco!

Don't have mine yet so don't have a manual... but i'd never put 38psi in a car the size of the Scirocco with the size of the tyres it has... no matter the manual says!

In fact I can't think of a road car i'd out 38 psi in... a tractor maybe, HGV, massive estate with a boot that's always full of concrete.

Someone has helpfully added a link:

http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... &mode=view" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

33 all round for 2 passengers... then it varies depending on load between front and rear

Well the facts are, quite clearly, the Vehicle Manufacturer and tyre manufacturer know a hell of a lot more about it that you do.

Err, did you click the link above that shows the label on the car?

I'll stick to my own knowledge too though thanks... you are of course completely welcome to do as you please.

I see the pic, and it says 33psi (or 33.36 if you convert 2.3bar more accurately) minimum.

You just told the guy to go with 30-32, based on not even owning the car.

Awesome, well done, we all bow down to your amazing technical knowledge.

Right... clearly you have some internet warrior mission within you.

It's a forum, if you treat everything you read on a forum as a fact you'll live a confusing life. I offered a suggestion based on a lot of my own personal experience driving a lot of cars over a lot of years in a lot of different ways... as i said, you're welcome to run whatever you want.

Sad to say that despite it being a great car, the Scirocco is nothing amazing when it comes to basic physics, it's a FWD car that weighs a reasonable amount and has fairly large tyres, as such - for me the tyres will be over inflated at 38psi and i would be trying around 30-32psi to get an idea of the feel and wear. 33psi may well be absolutely perfect, but 30-32 is an awful lot closer to 33 than 38 is and the feel of the car will be completely different!

And to be pedantic, that doesn't say minimum 33, it says 33. LOL to your edit... so now you agree that you can question the manual and it's not always right?

You did right in checking the tyres when the light came on.

Have You changed the tyre pressure on one or more tyres within the last 500 km? (300 miles?)
Have You change from winter to summer tyres?

If either is the case, then check tyres for nails or other obvious defects, dobblecheck tyre pressure (I recommend going by the manual/fuelcap). Reset the tyre pressure monitor (push and hold until it beeps), the button is inside the gloovebox.

If neither is the case, then take it to VW.

Strange coincidence mine came on this week , checked the tyres 3 were at 35 PSI one at 32, I am sure the manual says between 30 - 35 PSI for each tyre , anyway pumped the low tyre up to 35 and reset the warning light and not a problem , manual does say the warning light may come on when driving over rough roads , andI was driving up a farm track to chesterfield oops I mean the A61 ;)

So it worked correctly in alerting you!

Pretty good as the expectation is 4 - 5 psi drop in one tyre for the TPMS system to trigger a warning once it has reached maturity calibration.

Vibration is also a component which the TPMS algorithm looks at all the time. Its stored in the ABS unit (controller 03) in measuring block 230,4.

Explained here in more detail.

Doesn't explain gibbie73's warning appearing unless the Scirocco had been on a rough road at the time or just before the warning appeared. If not and it re-appears again, maybe the dealer should have a look at the ABS controller to see if any faults are present.

hi All,

many thanks for your words of wisdom, for information the tyre sizes in the fuel cap dont have the size for some reason,
I have deflated them all to 35 which seems muchbetter and will reset the tyre pressue thingy... where is the reset button? HEEELLP

So is 38 psi too high then?

On the fuel cap it clearly says for 18" alloys recommends 38 psi...

Assuming you have the same sticker as in the post i linked to above, it says 33 all round if you only usually have 2 people and some light luggage on board - regardless of tyre size. It varies if you have a full car and lots of luggage though...

It might be different for the different engines - the 170 diesel being a potentially heavier engine may require higher tyre pressures.
Go with what the sticker on the filler cap says.

As I said above, I still personally think that is too high for a car the weight of a Scirocco, but the diesel will be heavier over the front axle so may need a little more.

Going with what the sticker says is sound logic.... but no harm in experimenting and seeing how the car feels!
