One thing to note on the potential difference in servicing costs is that the second service lists an air con check/service which they should offer as an optional thing for about £75. Some of those prices might have added it by default.

They only asked me when took it in this morning so that's an unexpected top up on the price.

Yep I was going to ask this as they phoned me yesterday asking me if I wanted to book it in for the aircon service for £79, I said I would get back to them once I checked on the forums and I did ask why they didn't ask me about it when the car was in.
At least I've go my answer and will book it in once I buy 2 new front tyres to replace my winters on the front.

Because the better weather is just around the corner they start really pushing the aircon service. Same every year.

Does this need to be done or not or is it just a money making exercise ?

My understanding is that if you regularly use your air con so that seals don't dry out then the chances of the gas leaking or a build up of bacteria happening are greatly reduced.

IMO if the system is working correctly and the air is producing cold air then their is no requirement for it to be done.

If it was a requirement it would be listed in the service schedule and not just a recommendation

I paid up for it.

Got the car back this afternoon from Dane in Chester.
Service, aircon, and I needed a new fog lamp (just got the part - I'll fit it myself) £298.

I was asked if I wanted the air con service (£79) at only one of the 3 garages I phoned, but declined. May go for it after 3 years but system seems to be working fine still even though I don't use it regularly enough.

This is correct, and if it is climate you have in the car the aircon will automatically come on every time you switch the car on. I wouldn't have a dealer service for aircon at this early stage - never the less if you really want to have an aircon service I would shop around there are many that do it and it is far cheaper than £79.

I took mothers pug and that only cost me £29 for a service and refill. Don't kid yourself a service is just blowing out the rubbish and making sure no leaks exist and topping up the gas if required. It isn't a repair...that should still be under warranty anyway.

Called into VW dealer today for the ‘best price’ service (2nd year 10k non variable on a 2L Diesel GT) and was given an abrupt “ VW are now using fixed service costs” and was quoted £250 !

And further told: ring around and you will find that we all quote the same ‘fixed price’

I was under the impression that VW did away with fixed pricing a couple of years ago !

However, did as suggested and rang a second dealer who quoted : £195 ! a saving of £55

Comments appreciated.

I have the free servicing plan as I had finance. So will be ok for 2 years, but must ask, is the option still there again for a further 2 years (or whatever it may be) in 2 years time? Also, is it transferable? If I sell mid way through a 2 year servicing plan, does that 1 year stay with the car and it's new owner?

£129 does not sound bad at all for a first service. Mine is due in about 3,000 miles.

Question.

Is it a flat fee across the range? Would it cost the same £129 for a 122 TSI >> 210 TSI >> 140 TDI >> 170 TDI

Cheers

I Just ring around to get the cheapest within 30ish miles then go back to my local dealer who price matches. My car is booked in Friday for a 2nd 40,000 longlife service £198 and dsg service £169
If you see S9 CTC driving around give us a wave I do 40,000 miles a year it gets lonely out there

Completely agree, wring around, even from one dealership to another - I took the details provided above and confirmed that a dealership in (I forget where, somewhere up north) did the service for £145 and called locally who confirmed they will match the price.

£129 might be a good price but they don't do very much for that. Just and oil & filter change and top up your fluids I think.
Paid around that for mine last year. I'd only been back in the house an hour after dropping it off and they rang to say it was ready  And they'd managed to wash it in that time.

What did you expect them to do?

IIRC standard time for that service is 0.6hrs.
