RNS with the mic working for phone but not voice activation

Post by JohnFol »

Just, finally, got the RNS 510 (1T0035680C) installed and working and have started playing with the new features like voice activation. No commands seem to work so I recorded a voice tag that just comes out as static. However if I use the phone kit (5N0035730D) works 100% and I can be heard clearly.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Is the RNS programmed via VCDS to use voice commands ?, which buttons are you pressing to activate voice commands ?.

I use the star key and get the guidance of " say Radio, cd ..." but no words are understood. Also coded steering wheel so I can press the button on left spoke at bottom (used to mute radio )

Thought you had to mod the cabling to do a pass thorugh to the RNS?

As standard the factory bluetooth mic only connects to the Bluetooth unit under the seat. For the RNS to "share" the mic to be able to pick up the spoken commands, the mic needs a pass through installed to the RNS which isnt there by default. That's why you are getting static when recording voice tags, as the mic won't currently be connected to the RNS.

It's a mod I'll have to do as well when my Rocco turns up as I will be retro fitting by current RNS into it in place of the RCD, and it will have the Bluetooth in from the factory. I believe that Kufatec do a wiring harness with the necessary passthrough installed.

BT self installed, so it sounds like I need to look at how it's connected into the loom...
Is this the Kufatec harness you ar referring to? http://www.kufatec.co.uk/shop/product_i ... S-510.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
There were 2 options on their site and the only difference seems to be the inclusion of a microphone.

BTW, 1st use for the sat nav was yesterday and chuffed to bitswith what it does!

Whick kist did you buy ?, and where is the mic connected to ?, there is a mic bypass on some kits that goes to the BT unit and there is another connector which sends it to the RNS, which kit do you have ?

Funny you say that as the loom with the kit seemed to have more than 1 connection...
I'm reluctant to keep taking trim off and radio out but I think it might be the only way.

Yes, at the top end of some kits there is a mic bypass, it probably needs swapping around

You basically want to connect the long wire from the mic to the port that goes inwards to the Quadlock and then the one coming out of the qualock goes into the loom going to the bluetooth module.

Once you have take the mic wire out of the connection it's in now it will only fit into one of the ones from the quadlock so it should make sense.

So if I understand correctly, the 3 white block connectors in your diagram should all be connected, without the need for another harness?

yes, all those should be connected, the long mic one from the roof should go into the quadblock and straight into the RNS, then the other one should route through to the BT unit

Morning chaps, finally got round to trying the suggestions and got round to posting the findings.

You were spot on with the fact I had connected the mike on the cable to the BT unit and not via the RNS. Took 20 mins start to finish to take HU out, change leads, check, and refit.

Big thanks for the advice.

No problems, glad you got sorted, its a shame there are not a few more instructions when you buy them telling you this needs doing.

Glad you got it sorted. Can I now ask a question.

I'm picking my new Rocco up next week and I've ordered it with the factory Bluetooth but with the standard RCD 510 head unit.

My current RNS 510 that's in the Golf will be dropped in straight away. My question is, as I didn't order the nav from the factory, I guess I won't have the bypass lead installed in my car, i.e. Just from the mic to the Bluetooth unit.

What are my options at getting the voice control working then. Would I have to buy the Kufatec loom and use it to replace the factory mic cable that will be currently fitted ?

I bought the BT kit separate, but for me the loom it came with had the 3 mic connectors as per 182_blue's pictures. The kit I bought is a VW genuine so if I were you, I'd have a quick look before spending any money. You should be ok

Thanks for the reply John. Guess I 'll find out this weekend when I fit the RNS. I do hope all the connections are there and it just needs plugging in. Would love to get the voice control working simply.

Knowing my luck though, I probably have to completely replace the mic harness :eyepop:

Hi Sootchucker

Was interested in what you found...I am just waiting for my ROC to be delivered in 3 weeks, got my RNS ready to replace the RCD510 and have also spec'd factory bluetooth... Did you need to replace the mic harness and did it all go to plan?
Cheers Pete

No, I didn't replace the factory fitted harness (didn't even touch the mic or the interior light assembly), just installed a patch cable from Kauftec that runs from quad lock in the back of the head unit, to the connector on the back of the phone module under the drivers seat. Pretty straightforward really, although for what you get, for £45 incl P&P it's a bloody expensive little cable and connector :D
