hi everyone

just a quick question or two. From what you guy's are saying should i be considering the premium bluetooth factory option along with the fiscon basic+ setup?

what would be the preferred option, premium or fiscon? does anyone use a HTC Desire with the premium setup and how are you finding it for call's? usually listen to the radio in the car so streaming media is not really high on the list of must haves for me.

thanks

Hi, I had a fiscon basic plus fitted yesterday, didn't have ANY phone prep on car before, whilst I'm delighted with the fiscon, which works superb with wifes Samsung Tocco and my Nokia, phonebook , voicedial, and everything works on RNS 510 big screen and white MDI fitter told me it would not sync phonebook with an android phone. Bit disapointin as wife was gonna uprgrade to HTC Desire HD. Just waitin to try and sync daughters new HTC see if the newer HTC's sync. Hope i aint wasted my dosh.

\Sorted just paired up HTC phonebook and everything working. Rung fitter he thinks the phonebook on his phone had too many numbers in, and he perhaps didn't allow unit enough time to sync. Great job on installation and Craig travels to you he's based in Huddersfield. I met him at Meadowhall Sheffield for the install http://www.camelectric.com/OEM_retrofit.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hi Guys,

I've been trawling through old posts looking for information on installing the factory bluetooth phone kit. I understand that the module mounts under the drivers seat? Can anyone post a picture of this installation please? I've been watching several phone kits with wiring looms on eBay and bought one this week, any advice on removal of my Bury Bluetooth and installation of the VW kit would be welcome.

One post said the module sits in some protective foam, velcro'd to the carpet under the seat, is this right?

I've found some of the Bury kit wiring, and assume it's module is behind the RCD510, is there a typical installation for the Bury kit?

I have VCDS, will I have to change the settings going from Bury to VW kit?

Thanks.

Yes, the OEM unit is located in a styrofoam box under the seat - seems like a flimsy idea but its out of the way so does not get damaged by feet.

Thanks Mark, could you post a pictrure?

I'd like to see just where it sits and how the cables are routed.

Will see what I can do - although its a bit too dark now. Mine is in a Golf Mk.6 by the way - its a factory fitted unit so would presume its the same as a Roc would/should be....

The alternative approach seems to be to house the Blutooth unit below the head unit: http://www.vwclub.co.za/phpbb3/viewtopi ... 0305fa0133" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's very helpful, thanks.

The new bluetooth module should come today, I'll have a look at the weekend. It's going to be a suck-it-and-see job, I didn't install the Bury Bluetooth and so don't know anything about that installation. If the VW kit will fit behind the RCD510 that will certainly make things simpler. The Bury control panel is mounted inside the covered cup holder, out of the way, and most of the time it's operated using voice anyway, but this does mean that I'll have to have most of the centre console out to remove the Bury kit. And while that's out I could put the new bluetooth control where VW intended.

It will be an interesting job.

The parts have come today, not quite as plug'n'play as I'd hoped.

The instructions say green and white for CAN, but the twisted pair in my loom are orange and white, no issue I guess?

Do the instructions look OK to the experts on here?

Can I buy the pins to crimp or solder to the bare wires I have or is there some clever way of connecting up?

Thanks.

What can those of us with an RCD510 with no bluetooth do? I'm a bit confused by the posts above, some indicate we need RNS, some we need bluetooth prep (how do I tell I have that?)

Cheers for thoughts!

My car was retro fitted with the VW Bury Bluetooth kit by the dealer before I bought it, it was a demonstrator. The dealer said they had fitted the Bury kit because the VW Kit didn't work with iPhones. I would always have preferred the VW kit because my phone at the time was a Nokia that did support the RSAP system that VW used, and I liked the full integration it provided.

Anyway, the bury kit has always worked well, but I don’t like the extra touch-screen controller that comes with it, and the fact that it’s not integrated with the Multi-Function Steering Wheel, the Radio, or the Multi-Function Display in the dash. For receiving calls it’s all voice commands, and to make calls you have to start it off with the dedicated touch-screen, then voice commands. I’ve hidden the control panel in the covered cup holder.

Image

I’ve recently had a hire car with the proper VW Kit fitted and found it so much better than the Bury kit that I want to take the Bury out and fit the VW Kit. The later VW kits are also meant to work with iPhones, not that I’ve got one.

Like you, my car didn’t have the factory phone kit, and has an RCD 510, so I think my start point is similar to yours. My understanding is that the VW Kit will work with the RCD510 so that phone audio comes out of the car speakers, and voice control of the phone kit is possible, using the microphone button on the Steering Wheel, and with displays on the RCD510 and the MFD in the instrument console. With the RNS510 you can voice control the Nav system as well.

I’ll start by taking the bury kit out. I expect to find it tied in to the RCD510, as it mutes RCD510 audio when the phone is in use, and uses the car speakers. I don’t know if it’s on the CAN bus or not, but given the functionality, I doubt it. I hope taking the Bury Kit out helps me understand how it connects to the RCD510, and lets me see what I need to connect in the new VW Kit. I don’t know where the Bury black-box is hidden, but the wiring seems to go under the RCD510, where some people have also installed their VW Kits.

I was initially surprised that the new VW loom didn’t have pins on it to connect to the RCD510, but looking at other forums it seems I have to splice these wires in to the existing ones to the RCD510. Some people have soldered, some made up patch leads, and some made new interconnect looms with pins, connector shells and all.

When I get chance to have a go at it I’ll post pictures on here.

I've stripped out the VW Bury Bluetooth kit, all very straight forward once the RCD510 and Climatronic controls were out. It was just sat at the back of the centre console, an adapter loom connecting it between the car RCD510 loom and the head unit. A single wire to the fuse box supplying it, and the microphone on the windscreen pilar.

Image

The new VW Bluetooth loom is installed, microphone in the headlining centre unit, and connected up. I'll put the black-box in the same place the Bury unit was, I think there's enough room.

Now I need a little advice... I need to pop four of the pins out of the RCD510 head unit connector so that I can solder the bluetooth connections in and slide heatshrink over the pin and joint to protect it. It's the larger pins I need to get to, Power supply, ground, and CAN Bus Hi and Lo.

I'm sure there's something I have to pinch, push or pull, and then the pins will just slide out but can't figure it out. Is it something to do with the purple clip peeping out of the side of the connector?

Image

Thanks for your help.

RNS (510) is the similar looking VW sat nav unit. You can tell an RCD 510 from an RNS 510 externally only by the fact the the RNS has eight buttons to the RCD's six (three each side of the screen). You only need an RNS510 if you want sat-nav. If your happy with the capability of the RCD510 (particularly the fact it has an integral 6 CD changer which the RNS does not) then you only need to get a Bluetooth module added. The latest VW units (9w7 from memory) work with both RCD and RNS units perfectly. The real issue is if you want to get oen installed professionally or are happy to have a go liek our froend Alurt is!

Personally I would not want the hassle. There are issues to consider - if yoru car has the multi-function steering wheel the VW units, correclty installed, will allow the phone to be operated by the wheel button. You shoudl have a large MFD (the display unit between the two instumrnt closcks) and that will also display the phone baook and phone settings too (as well as the dedicated phone screen you get on the 510 units which works very well.

I am a big fan of the VW Blutooth, 510 and MFSW combined set up as it just works so well :-)

Fianally - you can tell you have a VW Buetooth unit fitted at the factory as its housed in a styrofoam box under the drivers seat. A unit could be installed elsewhere and if so you will see phone functionality when you press the phone button on the 510 or scroll through the MFD menus. It will call for Bluethooth paring of the first time you have used it.

After much swearing and levering with a jeweler's screwdriver I managed to slide the purple locking key out of the quad lock connector, then with two bent paperclips released the locking tabs on the pins in the quad lock to slide them out. I've soldered the four unterminated wires as directed by the instructions, and inserted the yellow lead that had a pin attached. All sleeved and back together. The plug'n'play looms that seem to come with other kits would have made things simpler, but this is still a nice neat installation.

The 5K0 035 730 box sits nicely on its side up against the climatronic ducting, a couple of pieces of foam stopping it rattling. I wonder why VW put it under the driver's seat?

After some messing about I've coded the car to recognise the bluetooth module. The phone functions appear correctly on the RCD510 and in the MFD in the instrument console.

Image

Image

I still have a few issues to resolve... The MFSW phone button works correctly, but the the press to talk voice control doesn't do anything. I also seem to have some new errors in the VCDS autoscan. Central Electric 09 is showing an issue on auto scan, but no faults, and the telephone microphone is reporting open circuit but works fine.

Do these units actually support Voice control or is that a function of the RNS510...?

Well, having read the car handbook, it seems that the bluetooth module is integrated with the RCD510, the instrument cluster MFD and the Multi-Function Steering Wheel, but no mention of voice control. I'm a little surprised, but still prefer the better integrated "Premium Bluetooth" kit to the Bury Touch kit that was installed before. Is this right, does it support voice control?

It does show what a good bit of kit the Bury Bluetooth is though. More sophisticated that the VW kit, smaller, and cheaper.

If I update to RNS510 at a later date, do I get voice ontrol...?

I think I'm getting there, but am confused by the VCDS scan which states in the headlines that there are faults on the Central Electrics (09) and Phone (77) modules, but doesn't give any detail in the section specific to those modules.

Has anyone got any pointers for me?

Thanks.

They are pending faults......
09-Cent. Elect. -- Status: Malfunction 0010
I guess this one is because the car battery is low in charge level due to your installation work. It starts to show at about 11.8 volts and below. The 09 - CE Controller is about to be instructed to shed electrical loads by the battery monitor. As the voltage drops towards 11.6 volts, 00907 - Intervention load Management will flag up in the 09 - CE Controller to indicate its happening.

If you go into the Engine ECU Controller - 01 and look at an early Measuring Block number like 004, one of the fields will have the voltage. Usually its Field 2.

It is a self clearing fault code - operator intervention is not needed, so just charging up the battery by driving for a while should make the 0010 go to 0000.
77-Telephone -- Status: Malfunction 0010
I see the phone is coded in the 19 - CANBus controller .

I would guess that this is a slight protocol incompatibility caused by Controllers 19 & 77 being old and new controllers. Seen it before and it should not stop operation of the phone. It won't generate a fault code visibly. The only possible way to clear is to raise the firmware standard of the 19 - CANBus Gateway controller (or swap out the Controller 19 unit for a compatible later date of build).

Thanks for your advice, the car had told me it was going to shed load to protect battery voltage. It also started to make a quiet gong warning tone when unlocked, every ten seconds or so, which I assume is a further warning of low battery?

Everything does appear to be working, I'll do another scan when I get home tonight to make sure all is well.

Does this kit support voice control of the phone?

That ties in.

Should clear the 0010 indication but more than one drive may be needed to raise the battery charge to a level where the voltage remains high enough that it will cancel. Not something to be concerned with, given what you have been doing. Battery is colder in winter so takes longer to absorb a charge to a higher level. SHort cut is to put the car on a trickle charger for a while.

Phone
