I'm a bit disappointed since I took my brothers new car out for a spin at weekend, its a 57plate mk5 golf gt sport 140pd with 20,000 on the clock, I noticed a lot of difference between the pull all the way thru the rev range, mine pulls a bit but not what it's ment to be like. :-(
I know the lad who we bought it off and he says it's defiantly not remaped! So I rang awesome gti tunning guys and they said that the golf engines are normally over the bhp were as the rocco are actually under??? Like 130-135 also mines only done 1000miles has any1 noticed the difference or do I have a faulty car?

GIVE YOUR CAR A CHANCE TO GET UP TO ITS BEST! Comparing it after only 1000 miles to a 57plate that has done 20k is like asking you to get out of bed & go run a marathon straight away without stretching & comparing your performance to a professional runner the car will keep improving to 5000miles & possibly even past that.
& from people who have had theirs dynoed I don't know anyone who's car has been under what is stated. When the engines are common, if not identical to a large extent, between the golf & the scirocco range why would they over read for golf & under read for rocs?!
I've had a 140TDI PD MK5 Golf, a 170TDI PD MK5 Golf and a 140TDI CR Scirocco.
The 170PD blows both 140's away for 4th/5th/6th gear acceleration. The main difference between the PD and the CR is power delivery. The PD will seem faster because the torque surge is more pronounced in it's feel. The CR has a smoother power delivery.
About a mile into my journey to work, I get onto a 70mph dual carriageway from a 30mph road via a sliproad. If I enter the road from the slipway at30mph and floor it, I used to hit 70mph by the time I passed a certain signpost in the 140PD, when I got the 170PD, I could hit 80mph at the same signpost, and even though it doesn't feel as fast, the 140CR passes the signpost at 78mph.
The 140PD does feel faster than the 140CR, but it isn't.
One thing I do miss about the PD units is the economy - it stayed the same no matter how hard I drove the car, whereas in the CR, drive it soft and it'll give exceptional fuel economy, drive it hard and it's pretty thirsty for a diesel.

thanks for the replies guys! maisbitt - "One thing I do miss about the PD units is the economy - it stayed the same no matter how hard I drove the car, whereas in the CR, drive it soft and it'll give exceptional fuel economy, drive it hard and it's pretty thirsty for a diesel." i know what you mean its very thirst for a diesel compared to the pd? so does the economy get any better than what it is at a 1000?
Well, in the 140PD, I got a consistent 49mpg around the doors, a consistent 52mpg on the motorway.
In the 170PD, I got a consistent 45mpg around the doors, and a consistent 51mpg on the motorway.
If I drive the 140CR like a nun around the doors, I can get 51mpg in the summer and 49mpg in the winter, drive it hard and it's 47mpg in the summer and 43mpg in the winter (currently averaging about 45mpg). Best motorway run, I did a consistent 80mph round trip for 75 miles on the A19 and got 57mpg trip average.
I didn't find mpg improve over time, but the longer i've had mine, the harder i've driven it! It did feel a little looser at 5000miles, and then again at 10000 miles, but at 16000 miles, I don't think it'll loosen any more. The pothole situation here is making me dislike low profile tyres - 3 tyres knacked from sidewall bulge caused by potholes in the last 11 months.

This is odd because I have found the exact opposite. We have an Audi A3 140PD TDI (57 plate 21k miles) and my 140CR TDI Roc that has done less than 3k. Even "out of the box" the CR felt more torquey, responsive, smoother and quieter than the 140PD. It also does noticably better mpg on the same journey (I used to use the Audi for work and now use the Roc). I don't know if we have a bad PD or a good CR, but the CR is a vast improvement in our case. When I drive the Audi now it seems noisy and slow.
I also think the comment from Awesome that golfs are typically over and Rocs are typically under is nonsense. The sort of comment made to a Roc owner to convince them to chip it I would suggest! I don't think I had ever seen a dyno run on a VAG TDI where the standard engine didn't put out more bhp than quoted. It is also inconceivable that VW would be selecting engines and putting good/bad ones in specific models.
The CR is a better unit, its quieter, smoother, has the potential for better economy (if you don't cane it), and the turbo doesn't run out of steam at about 3300rpm like the PD unit does.
The PD unit does feel a bit more powerful, just because it seems to rely purely on the turbo for all of it's power (the CR unit seems to have more go in all gears below 1800rpm), and it is more noticeable when the turbo does kick in with it's harsher power delivery.
VW engines are overachievers, straight off the production line the've got at least the quoted output, and once they've loosened up a bit, they're likely to have 5-10% more than quoted output.

my brother has just read this post and is now pissing his sides singing "mines faster than yours" thanks for the replies guys i will just see how it gets on!
orrrr shall i just go and get it mapped now? Iwas going to wait till 5000 but its just to tempting now i have a younger annoying little b@$*@%d of a brother with a fast golf!!
His Golf will feel faster due to the uneven power delivery, but it won't be. The CR unit is less brutal when the turbo kicks in, but it'll be faster before and after the turbo kick in. The turbo on the PD unit tails off about 3200rpm, making you change gear, the CR unit has a more useable rev range before the turbo tails off.
