Have delivery times improved?

Post by Boober »

Hi all,

Newly joined as I am thinking about a 170 TDi GT or a 160 twin charger. Have just cancelled my order for a BMW 123d - which is a shame - but it's a long story...

My mum has a 2.0GT with nav, leather, xenons, sunroof etc, so I know the car and know I like them! Unfortunatley I have to have less than 160g / KM of CO2 so can't order a 2.0 myself.

However, some of the nightmare delivery times are putting me off - so wanted to ask quickly, has it improved yet at all, or are we still looking at 6 - 9 months delivery?

Thanks in advance!

From what I gather from recently placing an order, the delivery times depend not only on demand for the car in general, but also the specification (i.e. engine type / options) and dealer allocations. It seems that at various times since the Scirocco was introduced, VW have had 'supply shortages' of various components (anything from panoramic roofs to RCD510 radios to DSG gearboxes to 1.4 engines) and if your order included any of the items in short supply, your build / delivery may be delayed - you will probably find out the current shortages by looking at this forum. Also some dealers seem to take orders when they have already sold their 'allocation' for the month - I have heard of dealers delaying 1-2 months before having the allocation to actually place an order with the factory! Once the order is with the factory (and assuming your order does not include any of the items in short supply,) the current (UK) lead times seem to be about 14-16 weeks, and about 6 months for the R model. It will be worth it in the end though, just consider carefully if you want a quick delivery & have certain 'must have' items on your spec list - Good luck!

I've I were you I would look elsewhere as the information regarding delivery is vague and is always subject to change. Whatever your quoted when you order you should ignore and add about 12 weeks.

I would be amazed if you were happy with the entire process from order to delivery as its been an awful 6 months for me (R DSG) and I don't think I will ever order a new car again...unless it's a Ferrari or Porsche & i'd won the lottery.

If your prepared to wait and wait and wait some more, then order. If not pick up a demo or choose another car such as an A3 or A4.

Anyway, good luck.

My local dealer has told me that delivery time is about 16 weeks. My present leased car is due for renewal in the middle of May (week 20). I'm told that if I order in the first week of January he is confident that the car will be delivered in plenty of time and that the dealership will store the car until the leases are finished. He knows the car I want is a GT 170 DSG with just standard equipment.

Thanks for the info guys - exactly what I was worried about - especially given I will go for some options.

I don't need it in a hurry, but as a point of principle it seems crazy to wait for what is a mainstream car afterall.

VW are the worst, but I've heard delivery nightmares about quite a few manufacturers recently.

A3 delivery isn't any better.

Best is to find a stock / cancelled order one that's close to the spec you want.

Otherwise be prepared to wait minimum 16 weeks on current form.

I got mine in 14 weeks from ordering so was rather chuffed. :)
