VAT discount cut-off date

Post by SimplyGed »

Just had confirmation from my dealer that my car is getting built next week :D which should mean delivery to me in early Jan. Now, my dilema is whether I wait until 1st March and get a new reg??
The dealer doesn't have any problem with me doing that - afterall, they already have the sale, but the problem I have to think about now is when VW's cut-off date for the 2.5% VAT discount they offered me when I ordered the car (September '10).

Does anyone know if VW have a cut-off date for the discount? Does anyone who has got a long delivery date and ordered before November last year know if they are going to get the discount when their car arrives?
Of course, I have the extra problem that my car will be sitting there ready, rather than still awaiting production !

Cheers

This post was exactly what I was wondering before I asked my dealer, my car will be built week 2 and I am also waiting until march for new reg, the dealer said price is as agreed when ordering as I ordered before January they have a symbol next to your order on there comp so don't worry :)

VAT will be charged at the prevailing rate when you are invoiced for the goods. Therefore if an invoice is raised after the 4th Jan 2011 it will be at 20%. Date and Tax points are on the date of invoicing not on the date of ordering or delivery. Your deposit should be charged at the prevailing rate that you provide the deposit (so if you gave £2000 deposit then this should be charged at 17.5%, and the ballance should be charged at the rate on the date the invoice is raised).

However the only way to overcome the VAT increase is to make full payment before the 4th Jan 2011 and have an invoice prior.

Whilst perfectly correct tax wise vw are doing frozen vat deals whereby the invoice price is reduced by the exact difference in vat. This however depends on when the car was ordered and what was agreed re final price with the dealer.

As above - Vw promoted they will hold the final price payable equal to 17.5% Vat for all orders placed by 30th Nov 2010 for vehicles delivered after 4th Jan 2011, at least thats my understanding and agreement with my dealer. (My order placed with dealer Oct 12th, with a Vw commission no raised ~ Order place by dealer with Vw factory actual, Dec 1st ~ Build week being given as Week 6 2011 ~ Delivery early March).

I don't get the whole wait for a new Reg thing. Its a number plate - you've ordered the car just pick it up when its ready!?

09.09.2010 - Rocco delivered.

Depreciation yes, but I had a similar dilema when collectiing mine...

I worked out past values on glass's guide for a similar reg comparison, eg 2010 59 vs a 2010 10 reg post march etc.

Although £500-600 extra in residual for the newer plate, this of course came at a price in the first place paying more for the VAT which in my case was about the same figure.

...its still a brand new car (and a so depends how much a reg means to you..).

and so far as new plates go, everyone was raging about 10plates not too long ago, we're on 60plates now and is clearly the next short term thing to have....until 11 not to sound bitter lol but it is short lived that's all.

quite agree with the idea of waiting a few weeks to get new reg. Easy to disagree if you were lucky enough that yours came the second week of september. When it comes to selling if a car has same spec and same mileage only a mug would go for the older plate model....no brainer

true but if the older one was cheaper with same spec and mileage you might have that instead ...

each to their own...

I agree l-plate from a purely 2nd hand buying perspective.

If on the other hand you have an agreed purchase price on a new model not affected by any differential of 17.5% or 20% VAT which seems to be the point of earlier posts re waiting or not, then your re-sale has got to be better on the newer plate car.

cool, as mentioned on my particular purchase , the VAt discount was only valid prior to the new Reg so take delivery by 28 Feb 2010 - so it was a clear choice...buy for less, or pay more for the new reg.

If it had been a newer reg for "free" - i agree I would have waited a mere 2 weeks on top of the x months wait...

All depends on the circumstances and I note that the first post did ask when the cut off was, so it is not a given that it will be free for a newer plate!

I had a clear date to work to, and this is part of the topic ie getting it confirmed by the dealer, so that the decision is an informed one, and it is down to what has been agreed.

I'm still waiting for the dealer to get back to me, but all this input is really good.

I did have a read of my purchase agreement the other day and part of it relates to the "contract" and when I need to pay. Apparently, I have 21 days from the date I am informed my car is available for delivery (to me) to pay up and collect the car. After that, they can consider me to be in breach of the contract and cancel it. My problem is caused by the fact my car will be available for delivery about week 3 or 4 - a full 5-6 weeks short of 1st March. Based on that info, I might see if the dealer can hold off telling me it is available until 8th Feb - giving me the 21 days I need :)

I have offered to pay for the car when it arrives at the dealer and only collecting on 1st March, but the dealer said VW log their sales as the date of registration :(

It is a bit of swings and roundabouts regarding the reg plate. When I do go to trade it in, it will (hopefully) look pretty low mileage for a 60 plate - but I do like the idea of driving round in an 11 plate on 1st March :D
