How level is your steering wheel?

Post by SteveGT »

How level is your steering wheel? Mine is off by about 10 degrees, and is beginning to annoy me.

Have had my car from new and have not hit the suspension as far as I know, can it get worse over the 11000 miles I've had it for? It brakes in a straight line, etc.

Would a VW garage laugh at me if I asked them to straighten it?

I Doubt they will laugh at you (well not to your face LOL), has it always been like that, a couple of twists on the track rods and it should be level again, even removing the steering wheel and moving it one spline might fix it, but it might be too much, they may charge though !!

Cheers.

I think it has definitely got worse over time. Might pop in tomorrow and see what they say.

You are probably right its too much for a spline move as will push it the other side of centre.

Not unknown on the Scirocco for this to happen from new. Problem is.... since recent times, the dealer has to show before (out of spec) and after results (in spec.) to get it under warranty. But its worth a chat with them and see if they will address it FoC as good will.

Mine is slightly (about 3 - 4 degrees) to the right side down but a lot of the time it gets masked by road camber.

Mine is slightly off centre too. Its not enough to be an issue for me, so I'm gonna wait and ask the dealer to have a look at it at the first service.

Mine is as well, but on further investagation ive noticed that the drivers seat is not quite square on the steering wheel. So it looks off centre from your driving possition.

Mine is OK, but had the same problem in my old motor though. It starts to annoy you after a bit.

Mine was off by a few degrees when I collected it so took it back a few days later and it was sorted out under warranty. It's still not quite spot on but very difficult to tell now, like RW1 says it can either be masked or exaggerated by the road camber. The dealer should sort it for you as it is annoying.

Yeah mine is off too - and on the exaggerated by the road camber side of the fence. It's a used one though so not sure if VW will do anything about it. Taking it for its first service this week so will ask.

I don't think they can move the steering wheel on the splines. As far as I can remember it has a key on the splines.
It is the wheel alignment and they should be able to get it straight. Just make sure they use the right specs on the machine. I took mine for a service and they used the spec from a 1974 Scirocco :-)

Yes, had mine done at my first service. Cost £99 on top! But those few degrees make it feel much better.

Good point, but they catch you at work with your car in for a first service..."yes sir, you were right, we can fix it for..." etc.

Mine is off to the left by a bit, and my car is brand new. It starting to irritate me, and I'll probably bring it in over the next couple of weeks.
