My TDI 140 is set for Longlife and first service came up at 18000 cost about £135 Car has only used about 1 Ltr oil over that period :) . Checked about 1k after that service and service indicator is saying much the same duration till next service. I have always got the dealer to leave it on Longlife. Also I believe VW suggest this for the first service to see which is more suitable.

If I had it set to time and distance it would have been going in for its second service in 1k miles.

What sort of driving do you do? I have no idea why my long life is saying 8800miles! Did your service regime on the MFD ever change through out the year?

can I suggest you go to your dealer & actually confirm its on longlife as they may well have made an error. its all well & good us speculating but I seriously can't see the service indicator changing by almost 10k miles, sometimes you really do have to just go ask them (make sure you take any emails/documentation from when you requested it be set to long life if you have any)

Yea I have tried calling them a couple of times with no joy. They said the system doesn't say at the minute but they put all cars on time/distance. So looks like I will pop down to get it reset!

Hi,

I have yet to take delivery of my GT 2.0 TDI 140 on a 2 Year 10,000 mile personal lease. The type of driving i do is short journeys to work but longer stuff on the weekends which really lends itself to the T&D however i dont really want to service the car twice before it goes back so was thinking of getting it set to LL. Will the performance and running of the car really be affected by the longer service interval with the type of motoring i do or should i bite the bullet and see what happens on a T&D ?

Any advice would be great and i would just like to say this is a great site for this newbie.

One interesting thing to add, is someone said the oil for the LL is more expensive which is true, but almost all the garages only use the LL oil for both Fixed service and LL as it is cost prohibitive to store so many different types of oil.

The LL normally costs more per service, as their are a few more things to check out ( longer period with out inspection etc.) , plus they only get you every 18k miles normally instead of the every 10000 miles which is on fixed.

That's what an Audi Tech told me anyway :)

Another thing when does the air con get serviced? Is it in the VW service regime or is it something extra you have to do/pay for??

Well thought I would do a quick update. Went to the dealer they checked, and the car was already on Long Life so they found it strange showing a service in 9000 miles. They gave it a reset and today the service page now quotes 18400 miles or 738 days!! So am all happy now as I should get my money worth. However my driving style has been the same so still no real answer what the problem was.

Also just wandering as my previous post says how does aircon servicing fit all into the VW service regime?

see i dont agree with that. the computer was set on LL from beginning. if it says it needs a service now, it needs a service now!!!!

now that it has been reset, so it thinks you've got new oil in there, it's now requesting its first service at what, 27k miles?? stupid.

but if it was clever, the time/distance to service should come down very quickly as it is constantly monitoring the quality of the oil in the engine. so it should know you haven't got new oil in there after all.

my first service is due at 9400 miles (200 miles time). and it should be on LL too.

To get things straight my car is brand new and just hit 1000 miles! So should get its first service in 2 years which the Long Life Oil is designed to do. So what is wrong with that?

If it thought it had new oil in it then, which at 750 miles when it got reset is new anyway, and I drove the same as before then it would quote a similar mileage.

If you only cover 9400 on a long life service then you should really be on time/distance. Long Life is designed for people who do a lot of cruising and as you have a Scirocco R I reckon you don't just cruise around at 75mph on the motorway! :D

Anyway to post a PDF on here? Got a document off VW about longlife servicing which may be of use to some people.

Just want to add my 10p on LongLife servicing.......

We've been seeing a lot of VAG cars with 70-80k on the clock with failed turbochargers and just out of warranty. You don't need to check the service settings, just have a look at the state of the oil coming out the sump. It's horrid :( (you can check the status with VAG-COM under SRI).

The best engine internals we've seen are on cars that get regular oil and filter every 5k miles. The oil doesn't need to be exotic, a good 5w40 will do the job for most turbo cars, just changed regularly.

I know this doesn't apply to everybody and if you don't plan on keeping the car outside warranty then I guess it doesn't matter.
If only VW made a Scirocco VR6 Turbo......

Hi dave,

i didn't actually want to go on LL due to my driving style, but was "forced" onto LL due to taking out the SMT plan.

In reality maybe i shouldn't have opted for SMT but the cost of new 19's for the car meant that it was a good deal based on numbers (and i am an accountant)

so im not surprised my car is telling me to change the oil soon. But it doesn't bother me as its all part of the SMT plan :D

as far as I am aware you can't add it so it shows but if you add it as an attachment people can open, read & save it as they wish
