Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
Mine didn't have it and is a build week 10 car this year but I had to take it in to the garage with a problem (was losing power above certain revs) anyway they uploaded the latest ECU software to try and cure this and now it has the gear indication. That was a few months ago so somewhere between build week 10 and 16 they've updated the software.
Back to the main topic I was driving around in a 140 GT TDi Golf prior to getting my 170 Scirocco and can say that there was a noticeable difference in performance, the 170 Engine just seems to pull so much better with the extra torque, definitely glad I went for the 170 instead of the 140. The 140 engine is still fantastic but given the choice it has to be the 170 for the sake of a few mpg.

Something to be thankful for - it's almost as annoying as not being able to turn the DRLs off - can it be disabled anyone?bleedsoff wrote:Mine doesn't have it, unless I have not found it!

Don't know about the gear change indicator, however the DRL behaviour can be changed if you have (access to) VCDS.Grampa wrote:Something to be thankful for - it's almost as annoying as not being able to turn the DRLs off - can it be disabled anyone?
Candy White 1.4 TSI 160 - DSG, ACC, 18" Interlagos (Euro Premium&Sport packs), Alu Door Sills, Current VCDS Mods Needle Sweep, Cornering Fog Lights, Alarm Chirp, Emergency Break Warning, Dension Gateway 5, sort of..

Well as a quick recap the 140 TDI doesn't come with the gear change thing or chromed pipes.

You know you're starting to lose your mind when you argue with the gear selector hint on the dashboard......Searchin4aRoc wrote:Not something to pine for ... I find it pretty annoying!bleedsoff wrote:Mine doesn't have it, unless I have not found it!

You've got a point ... where I've positioned the steering wheel I rarely see the gear prompt now, so I'm copingDeagol wrote:You know you're starting to lose your mind when you argue with the gear selector hint on the dashboard......Searchin4aRoc wrote:Not something to pine for ... Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
I tested the 140 and didn't get it .. waited for 170, thats how much I did not like the 140. With a remap I think the 140 would have made me smile however as I was getting a company car it was something I didn't want to mess with.

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
I test drove the 140 Manual. In the end I opted for the 170 DSG.
I currently have a MkV Golf 1.9Tdi DSG (105PS). The extra 35 bhp made a massive difference on my current car and if you are taking that kind of jump then its definately worth it. However having spent some time in my mates 170 i knew the extra torque would make the 170 a lot more fun to drive.
That coupled with some nice touches like the chrome tailpipes, that imo finish the car off, did it for me.

I agree, ive had a 170 for over a month and its pretty damn quick. i tested both engines and the 170 has far more grunt:). The noise it makes is pretty good also haha:)

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
I went for the 140 in the end. I felt the price difference to the 170 was just too much. if I was going to pay that much extra I would probably have preferred to go for the TFSI. If the 140 proves too slow I can get a remap for much less. As it is, after a whole 6 days!, I am more than happy with the 140.

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
Get the 2.0 Tsi. It goes and sounds like a car should. Do some maths and work out if it might even be a cheaper option to run. I get over 40mpg driving nicely not above 70mph, but know it can boogie when I want! The exhaust note is sublime too. This may open a can of worms but why have a heavy diesel lump in a sporting car?

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
I presume this is just a wind up post, but I will take the bait! There is absolutely no turbo lag in a modern diesel like in the Roc, so you clearly haven't even driven one. The low/mid range torque, which is what is required in 90% of driving is way better in a diesel that a petrol and I laugh at your 40mpg!!! 50mpg easy and no pootling below 70 required. It is just not possible that a car costing £1000 more and using more fuel can work out cheaper to run either. Diesels also tend to hold their value better long term. Can of worms opened further!!!

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
Laugh all you like at 40mpg! All I know I would rather drive mine than yours. Are all the motoring press articles completely wrong? If you drive 12000 miles per year you will save £390 driving a TD170 over a 2.0TSi which equals out over 3 years of ownership. You are right, I didn't test drive either of the TDI's. I assumed they were the same as the dreadful engine in the Passat. Nothing....whoosh....Nothing! I apologise for making an ignorant assumption. Forums should stir things up a bit.

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
It must be said Top Gear much preferred the petrol as, I seem to recall, did Autocar. Diesel is still a good motor, but for proper enthusiastic driving it has to be the petrol (so they say). For many though it's about compromises and given the choice between, say, an Astra diesel and a diesel 'Roc - simples...

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
You would rather drive yours than mine but haven't driven either diesel. I rest my case. How old was the Passat you drove, 1963? Don't get me wrong, the TFSI is a great engine, but for everyday motoring, I actually prefer a modern diesel, even if there were no fuel savings, because good low and mid-range torque is way more useful in normal use than high end power which you may get to use 5% of the time. If you are getting 40mpg out of your TFSI you must be driving it way slower than I do mine, so what was the point of you getting it?
Horses for courses, but to start judging an engine you admit you have never driven leaves you looking like either a stirrer or an idiot, or possibly both.

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
Have you driven the Tsi? No Geoff they were:- 2 year old Audi A4 Tdi170 and 3 year old Passat Tdi140's. 1963?? Don't get personal and call me an idiot...it's just a matter of choice.
