Confused about my servicing
Hi all,
Got my car almost 2 weeks ago, as some of you know and almost hit 450miles. I asked for my car to be put onto Long Life, however in the service book under the PDI the time/distance is ticked. I assume as I asked for Long Life after the PDI was done, they changed it. Now the service has come up on the MFD and says 8900 miles or 733 days. To me this sounds way to soon to have a service esp as most of miles have been on the commute 10 miles doing 50mph dual carriage then 25 miles up the M11 to Stansted.
My initial reaction was that the car was still on time/distance regime but would the MFD be saying 733 days if it was! Can these figures change or not? I was hoping to get through my first year without a service (13000 miles per annum) !

Re: Confused about my servicing
It must be on Longlife due to the amount of days, TBH longlife can wind up costing you more as it sometimes needs doing quicker than the T&D, plus the fact the service for LL costs more (well at my dealers it does), the computer is working out what it thinks it will need, give it a chance to settle down and see what happens.

To be honest I don't mind servicing my car every year like other normal manufactures just if I do time distance I will be taking my car into the dealer every 9-10 months which is a joke!
But longlife seems to be the same for me at the moment just frustrating!

Are you hitting alot of traffic on your journey ?, yes it can change as you go along, it can of course get worse too, when i had my golf they accidentally put it on LL and it was wanting a service after only about 7k miles !!!, i did it yearly anyway and the service cost me £100, the LL service would have been £180

Do you have a sticker on the bit where the brake fluid change sticker is, lower down the B pillar when u open the door? Mine says first service must be done at 15k kms, which is roughly 9500 miles!!
This is regardless of T&D or LL!

Thats the T&D service as in the handbook, which is an oil change service, The dealer sticks these stickers on depending what service you choose, the R is far more suited to T&D anyway

Re: Confused about my servicing
Hi,
i had long life on my golf and was told by a mechanic that the oil for long life was a lot dearer also i was having to top it up every 5,000 miles or so so was carrying a bottle of oil round with me costing around £13 pounds for a litre the oil for the change was around £60.
I then asked for it to be put on the short cycle service which worked out cheaper plus i wasnt having to buy the top up oil.
Obviously your doing more miles and it burns a lot more oil this way.
But for my experience im talking diesel engine.
Thats all i have to offer on the matter and being guided by supposedly somone who knows what there talking about however if someone wants to correct this advice then i will gladly take any advice also.
Cheers.

Re: Confused about my servicing
well im on the SMT plan and they said as a pre requisite of this is that i go on LL servicing. So even i was a bit surprised that i need a service in 400 miles which puts it spot on the 15k kms first service schedule per that sticker!
or maybe they forgot to put it onto LL from T&D as set by factory?
ah well. don't bother me.

Re: Confused about my servicing
I thought VW servicing sounded awesome but now it seems to be a bit crap. On my last car it was a simple 1 year or 18,000 miles! Simple thats how it should be!

Yea hence why I think VW are a bit crap. If you are on long life should up the mileage or one year as per Fiat!
Sorry meant to mean which one is first.

Yeh, all I can say is my first vw service was £100, the second was £110, Fiat charged me
£180 for first and £180 for second service, VW have been cheaper, well at least when you get them to price match the local skoda dealers ;-)

Re: Confused about my servicing
I've had long life servicing on a couple of previous VWs and they didn't need a service for 18,000 miles, which was about 18 months of driving. It's definitely too early for your car to calculate when you'll need one as you haven't done enough miles yet.bleedsoff wrote:Got my car almost 2 weeks ago, as some of you know and almost hit 450miles.
As an alternative if you've just bought the car new, why not take out VWs three year servicing for £250 deal? You'll be on fixed interval servicing instead of long life, but you will know that the next three years are taken care of at a reasonable cost.

Yea I considered it, however my plan was to do longlife and as you say last out for a 1.5/2 years till I need a service. I hate taking in my car for a service, it is like a chore for me and the least I do it the better so putting it on time/distance would mean I would bring the car in for service every 8months or so. Also when I calculated it, putting it on longlife comes out the same cost assuming you make approx 1.5 years between services, which I am not at the moment . So I have lost my gamble at the moment so got my fingers crossed and hope the computer changes it mind!
Re: Confused about my servicing
if you go smt its long life by default (dealer set the golf up to T&D by mistake but reset it), mines been serviced every 16k miles on longlife
