Autocar Handling Test

Post by Kev »

Next weeks magazine has a handling test for the best drivers car of 2008.

In the picture of the featured cars is the blue Scirocco they tested last week :)

It's up against a gallardo, KTM, elise, nissan GTR, evoX, DBS, R8, Lexus ISF, 911 (or might be a cayman) and a clio (I'm guessing it's a clio cup).

Cant see it performing that well against that competion after all its front wheel drive and its not a light weight such as the clio cup. But hey still a compliment if it does make it in.

....I'm sorry, but undoubtedly impressive as the Scirocco's handling is, the standard factory one simply doesn't compare with most cars on that list - They've gotta be joking!

The Elise has Lotus handling - Need I say more?

The Evo X is '4WD' and comes with all the right toys straight out of the box!

The Clio Cup has a limited slip diff and handles and feels like a go-kart!

etc etc etc.

Now, if Autocar are going to include the Scirocco GT24 track version it would be quite a different matter!

***SPOILERS about the result + CAR Magazine***

It didn't fare very well. It's tuned for the road not the track but it did beat the Lexus IS-F.

However, this month's CAR has a Performance Car of the Year article and it made it to the last 8 but lost out to the likes of the KTM, Nissan GTR and Gallardo!

....

I'm sorry but I can't quite understand the cars which they have decided to group with the Scirocco - Nissan GTR and Lambo's are hardcore! The factory 'Rocco is good but not in that league!

They usually throw in a couple of fairly recent good cars. Mini's and clio's are often in there. I guess handling is about feel, not about how much money it costs. But at the end of the day it was never going to win against such accomplished hardware as the Nissan.

It's how it handles on the road that really counts and they say it's clearly tuned for that. It was just out of its depth on a track.

One thing to consider with tests such as these is that they typically use exceptional drivers under controlled conditions. The 'best handling' car for an average driver (which most of us are by definition) on the roads may be very different to the best handling car for a racing driver on the track.

I was lucky enough to have pouring rain when I had my 3 day Scirocco test drive, and I can honestly say I could access more grip in the wet in the Scirocco than my other cars in the dry. An expert driver might have had a different experience.

The Scirocco is a great 'real world' package.
