1.4 tsi problems

Post by motorsportmatt »

Took my 2010 1.4 tsi scirocco into the 'sealers' today to get a few things checked out, and was wandering if anyone else has had these problems.

1, Poor fuel economy (only getting 36-38 mpg Driving like a gilr. no offence to girls...)
2, clutch judder when in traffic and its like a on/off switch rather than progressive. ( vw says there is a problem but manufactures dont have a solution)
3, gearbox grating when accelerating.
4, holes in power delivery when cold/ light throttle openings.

I was a mechanic for 18 years and until recently a porsche technician so am not prepared to be fobbed off by pen-pushers behind desks.

any help would be appreciated.

Cant comment on 2-4 havent had that occur on mine and im 4000 miles in - the fuel economy though is about what I am getting driving quite normally around town.

Thanks for the reply, what are any other 1.4 tsi owners getting mpg?
Does anyone find that the power delivery isn't that smooth?

I'm averaging 36mpg and have done 1200 miles, a lot of that is motorway, thought I might get a bit more but I'm not too bothered. None of the other problems, but mine is a DSG so it might not apply.

with only 1200miles completed your engine will have a lot of loosening up to do yet keith!

i've done 7000 miles & am getting about 32-35 average depending how late i am to work & how much i want to get home ;) best i've had so far was 45 on a 2.5 hour motorway run back

can't say i've seen any of the other problems

On the power delivery - a lot is made of the supercharger working down the rev range but cant really feel it as much as I thought I would - I can hear it though!

Hi Matt

Some feedback:
(1) My average mpg after 5,700 miles is only 37.5 mpg avg. I've not been too impressed. I don't think it's very good for VW to claim 42.8 mpg in the combined cycle. It's way, way short!
(2) I have DSG
(3) I have DSG
(4) Not noticed any holes in power delivery. Mine is very, very smooth when accelerating hard or soft. Only gripe would be when I kick-down there is too much of a lag before the gears knock down and the power comes full steam. Only minor gripe and I guess this would only effect auto boxes.

Sorry to hear of your woes. Good luck with the dealer. Don't let 'em soft soap you.

Let us all know your findings.

Had my 1.4 for about a year and a half now and done just over 8k miles. The average fuel consumption for that time is just over 32mpg so I don't think what your getting is far off. I haven't noticed any of the other issues you've mentioned though. Keep us updated with how you get on.

my car has averaged over 40 mpg since the day i got it back in March, only done 2500 miles though. that's a mixture of motorway, town and country roads but i don't go crazy when i drive although i do give it beans now and then. so far i have come across no engine or gearbox trouble, only squeaky windows.

You could just set the mpg on the computer to give instant updating. I can get it to go at around 60mpg on the M40 if I sit on the inside lane 'feathering' the throttle. I can also easily get it down to 1mpg when pulling away from the lights though ;-)

I'm currently averaging 30 MPG but that's only after 900 miles and I rarely do any motorway driving.

After 900 miles I've only seen 40 on the trip computer once. At 7am on the 10mi trip to work I see 35-38mpg (driving gently). Coming home at 6pm in traffic I see 25-27mpg on the same journey. Lowest was 22.8. Not the same as my '57 Golf GT TDi PD but a much nicer sound!

Could any of these inconsistencies be down to other power drains in the cars?

Eg. Climate Control/Air Con or other drains which might be left permanently on?

I am assuming that the stated 42mpg by VW is based on one very small light person with no cargo or passengers driving a the absolute limit of economy with no gadgets on?

.....and slipstreaming a lot!!!

Manufactures MPG figures come from a rolling road test and like 55mph or something so yea very unrealistic.

i used to get about 41-42 before remap and 45-47 afterwards (driving like a girl)

not something i incurred. i quite liked the clutch feel and bite tbh
motorsportmatt wrote:3, gearbox grating when accelerating.
yep absolutley agree. the gearbox is poor! the synchros aren't really up to scratch, especially 1-2 and 2-3.
motorsportmatt wrote:4, holes in power delivery when cold/ light throttle openings.
cant say i had this tbh. mine used to still accelerate and pull suprisigly well even on partial throttle
