Roadside Assistance renewal

Just had the letter from VW saying my year is up and a price to continue using them.

Anybody choose them again or go elsewhere? price? service? etc

Have always used GEM in past when ran classic cars- very good and competitive price but really just a "tow you home"
Renewal price from VW is £89 for one year or£145 for 2years

i never needed to joined any breakdown services in my last 7 years of motoring, but then again it was a Honda...

is it really necesary to spend the money, considering the Roc is very new?

i would join prob. in its 5th year, or until something serious happens.

I don't see how VW can avoid recovering you if a warranty issue causes breakdown. If I get stranded anywhere for anything other than a puncture, accident or running out of fuel then they should be expected to come out and get you for free if the car is under warranty.

The VW scheme is way overpriced at £89 per year.

VW being cheap within the VAG group again - Audi and Skoda get 3 years cover and Seat get 2 years, which is topped up to 3 if you get a dealership service.

I've never taken out breakdown cover once my free year ran out, but i've never had a VW warranty issue that stopped my car dead - so I took the risk in driving without.

i think £89 is pretty reasonable, try getting a quote with rac or aa ?? you wil be shocked.

At the end of the day its down to the person, how much driving you do where etc.

If i break down i do not want the hassle of trying to find a local garage for recovery etc, also if i break down at 3am on the motorway who is coming out to me then??

also if i have a punture on the motorway, like hell im i changing it (you may think lazy sod etc) nothing to do with that, im not risking my life changing a tyre on the side of the motorway with cars and trucks flying pass at high speed.

and all for £89 i would bite their hand off imo.

You could get basic RAC cover for £8!

Buy it online via a cashback site, Normally £28 but you then get £20 back

I didn't renew my VW policy as my car insurance includes break down cover for free...

I can see what you mean. However, on a wet and windy Sunday night you break down with an unexplained problem on a motorway 100 miles from home. This is not the best time to be getting in a debate with VW about getting recovered from the motorway and the car taken to the dealer for assessment. I don't have it to hand, but I'm pretty sure the VW warranty is to fix whatever breaks - not recover you to a dealer.

It's your choice of course, but breakdowns tend to happen at the most awkward moments far from home - I'll be going with what ever I can find is the cheapest reasonable recovery service I can find, when my year expires. With my last car I used Tesco (who I think sub it out to Green flag) just so I had a safety net to get me home. About £70 a year I think.
