what temperature should oil be?
What temperature should the engine oil be at normal driving? The display shows in high eighties most of the time. Is this normal?

Re: what temperature should oil be?
The 1.4 160bp is usually between 85'C to 91'C. Sounds about what it should be.

Re: what temperature should oil be?
Once warmed up, on mine the oil shows 90-100c. It goes up to 106c sometimes, but usually comes back down.
Water on the other hand seems to go from around 70-85c (from memory).
I'm assuming the newer models now come with an oil temp display as standard?

Re: what temperature should oil be?
Thanks for the info. everone- reassured now- I've had cars wirth temperature gauges before but they showed a "normal " range-whereas the Roc is just a digital readout-so no indication of what's normal.

90 - 100'C on mine. Get a --- when the engine is cold, temperature doesn't show a reading until the oil temp reaches 50'C. Guess it may get higher if the temperatures in the UK ever warm up this year!

Re: what temperature should oil be?
Oil temp should be under 110 degrees. After that, the oil starts becoming thin and wear & tear of the engine speeds up. After 120 you start to loose oil pressure and you really should stop pushing engine. Also after that, viscosity of the oil is decreased tremendously.
As this should not be a problem while driving a std scirocco, you should keep an eye on oil temp if you moded your car heavily.

Re: what temperature should oil be?
Hi all, I'm from Singapore, I just understand from my fellow rocco here that theirs ride oil temp is range from 90 to 100 degree C, but mine 9since collection) nomral city drive is 100 to 106 degree C, when sometime leg littlebit heavy it is 108-109. However, on Tuesday I've tried up to 220 kmh in Malaysia North South Highway, the oil temp shoot as high as 116
I got feedback mine is too high, and need to send in for cheking? and we should not hit more than 120 degree C, is it correct? (when I noticed 116 immediate I slow down, means I could have more than 120 if I continue at high speed?)
Sorry, mine is rocco 2,0L, production week 49, mileage now 3k km, self oil changed at 2,5k km to Motul 300V + LM Cera Tec, and our climate here is ave 35 degree C, sometime recorded 38 C
thanks.

Re: what temperature should oil be?
Im no expert, but I would have thought it's because of the climate your in. Bearing in mind temperature in UK rarely exceeds 30 C, at the moment its 10-17 C.
Could try asking someone else in Singapore or phone your dealer and just ask them.

Re: what temperature should oil be?
I did, and here the reply:
Dear Mr.
Thank you for your information and your email.
I can appease you that there’s no problem with your car.
Please be reminded that we only can advise on VW approved oil.
If you use not original parts it could in worst case effect the warranty as well.
The oil temperature can easily reach 130 *C and above while driving in these conditions.
What means due to higher ambient temperature or stop and go traffic your engine oil will absorb a main part of your engine heat.
While driving it depends on driving behaviour or type of engine oil that you have slight differences between the temperature gauges/ displays.
I can assure that it’s okay to drive with an oil temperature of 116*C!
Many thanks & please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have anymore questions.
Best regards / Mit freundlichen Grüßen
However, my main concern is what is the max temp we should take note which he did not inform. :-(
i also went down to VW Center in person on last Sat after 12 pm, all technical staff went back, also call VW on Monday morning, but the customer services doesn't understand technical, leave msg, but till now no return call
I hit 121 C on Monday late evening drive at Malaysia Highway with "desire" speed, it went down pretty fast when I slow down say 50 - 80 kmh to 116 C. It was 2 hours after heavy rain and temp recorded 28,9 C
I've posted a thread on VAGSG somewhere last week, and received feedback mostly range from 90 to 100 C & 90 to 115 C for 1,4L & 2,0L respectively. None of them hit 120 C ?!
Anyway, I'll continue to monitor...

Re: what temperature should oil be?
My GT 2.0 TSI runs at 95 to 105C normal running ambient 8 to 15C. I understand 130C to be the max. Is your oil to the VW spec? Suggest to query the Motul web site if so. I did with Mobil.

Re: what temperature should oil be?
Do you think this is normal?
95-115'C engine oil temp after 15 minutes of slow urban driving. (Continues to climb although I seldom drive long enough to see if engine oil temp could exceed 120'c)
90'C water temp after 10 minutes, and steady.
Suspect that something is amiss with the engine cooling system (thermostat?).
Ambient temp about 20-25'C.
