RobMX:

Not sure, maybe the shorter tyre wall on a 19" tyre offers more support at lower weight ratings, 93 rating on an 18" might be required due to more flex at the tyre wall (with it being taller). The Dunlops on my 18", which have a 95 rating are classed as "reinforced" by a lot of tyre websites. I would expect that the shorter tyre wall of a 91 rated 19" tyre would have a more rigid tyre wall than the same tyre in 18" size (like flexing a plank of wood, shorter lengths of the same stuff are harder to flex).

Either way, I think these weight ratings are not purely about kerb weight, but the forces exerted on the tyres in service. As the tyres are the only bit of your car in contact with the road, i'd not take the risk on fitting 91/18" on my car to save £20

The reason I queried it in the first place is because I have an old camper van.....I have been involved in many a discussion about tyres sizes and load weights, laden and unladen vans, skinny tyres, fat tyres, you name it...

In short, a 91 load rating is more than enough for a scirocco and not dangerous in any way (my opinion, don't shoot me)....but if VW are quoting 93 rating then for insurance purposes thats whats needed!!

I just saw this thread, and was shocked by some of the prices quoted, so I did a little research.

My roc came with the pirelli pzero rosso's. Anyone living in the south may have heard of a place called Micheldever service station, who i'm led to believe are about the biggest tyre distributer in the uk (at least that's what I've been told).

Anyway, they will do the replacement pirelli for £141.72 fitted & including VAT etc. More interestingly however, there's a new Goodyear Eagle F1 tyre just come out, that they'll do for £136.33. Among a few other brands, I had some eagle F1's and thought they were great.

just some useful info

I've used etyres.co.uk a few times in the past. I have always found them very competitive and they come to you to fit.

Agree Micheldever tyres are cheap but................when i had 2 tyres replaced there I had scratches on the face of my alloys that were not there before and they denied responsibility. I would sooner pay my local garage 20 quid a corner more and get a spotless alloy back. That and the fact Micheldever is about 50 miles away so would cost near on 20 quid in juice going there and back.
Taken delivery : Silver, DSG, NAV, Black Leather, Park Sensors, Winter pack.

I use Micheldever as a point of reference also, usually are a good guide price, they also are the largest distributor in the area for most brands so you usually end up with the cheapest price. They own the Protyre Franchise as well, which are slightly more expensive because they supply the tyre to them.

Mytyres is good as it is owned by Delti the largest distributor and they have better buying power (only problem now is the EURO>Pound rate is dire so that means the price isn't as cheap as it usually is) but they are still cheaper and it even incudes delivery and they come from Germany.

The only other place is Camskill, otherwise it just depends what tyres you want for the car.

Once these PZeros go I'll be putting either Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric or Yokohama Parada Spec 2

Just to add to the micheldever thing. I've never actually used them, but as they're so big, and quite close to me, I have always managed to get someone else to price match. F1 autocentres have always done this, and on my old golf which had really nicely finished santa monica's I never got any marks. I do realise how much trust you need to put into someone who bounces your wheels along their garage floor!

Got a puncture due to the inept Oxfordshire council still failing to deal with any potholes around here. :grumpy:

Anyway, phoned around and Protyre in Heyford will do a GoodYear F1 Assymetric for 145 quid all in. Booked in for Saturday to have a pair of fronts as might aswell keep em all worn equally. Were down to 3-4mm anyway.
