Grr, stone chips

Post by ashley1407 »

Hey Guy's and Girls!

I did a quick search but couldn't find the specifics I'm after.

When I was cleaning my Roc earlier, I've noticed three, quite small but quite deep stone chips on the bonnet. It hasn't actually dented the metal but it's made a mess of the paint and I could so with getting it sorted.

Has anyone got any recommendations of companies that they've used to sort out this kind of thing? I'm waiting for a callback from Chips Away and they're the only people I've heard of before.

Here is a picture of the damage:

Thanks everyone!

Try the detailing forum for more info....you may find something in there.

Try a general detailing forum as well, I think there is one called Detailing World

Or there is a poster called Autoperfection....they run a detailing company and may be able to advise on how to go about getting it sorted

Chips Away job that. They sort it in minutes and you won't see it afterwards  Soon, as they look deep.

Just out of interest, how much would they charge for a job like that?

My Scirocco seems to be a magnet to them at the moment :( :(

I have two huge chips on the bonnet, I phoned chips Away and they said all they would be able to do was touch them in with a brush so I may as well just buy a touch in stick :?

Think I am looking at a respray but will leave it till the summer I think.

My bonnet has a couple of nasty ones, and the front bumper is awash with stone chips and marks. Anyone got any estimates on the cost of respraying the bonnet and bumper?

I've just had a phone call back from my local Chips Away guy. He said that he wouldn't touch it, it's a whole bonnet re-spray. I'm sure there must be a way of sorting it without having to resort to that.

Has anyone got any other recommendations? I'm based in the midlands if that helps.

Thanks.

There are only two deepish cuts in that photo??? No dings.

I'm amazed. Did he see it for real or just your description over the phone? I've had worse than that done by Chips Away if I got it right about two small deep marks in the photo.

Am I right in saying that any respray work would have to be at a vw approved bodyshop to keep the bodywork warranty in check?

I've got a good body man i've used for the last 5 or so years and I've got a feeling I wouldn't be able to entrust my Scirocco to him for touch up work due to this very reason?

Surprisingly no dings at all!

It was just an over the phone quote. He said that he doesn't really do stone chips at all. However, I'm tempted to try another Chips Away dealer as it's franchised and they may do different things.

Why on earth would you lot even think to ask a 'detailer' how to repair stonechips??

Touch them in, let the car acquire some more during the wonter months (it wil!) and get it resprayed when the weather gets better IMO. Chips away type repairs are shit.

What do chips away do if they don't do chips? They must just do T-cut polishing work. Had a dent the size of a 50p piece pushed out by dent-master and some stone chips filled in by them too at the same time on a metallic paint job, they were great. I think your local chips away franchise is taking the piss, maybe they've just bought in to the franchise and haven't had the approved training on painting chips in yet?

Just a quick update on this one.

I phoned another ChipsAway guy and he is coming out soon to get it sorted. I guess it must have been an inexperienced guy who did I phoned initially.

I'll be working from home the day I get the repair but I'll do my best to get some photos of the repair being carried out.
