Tyre prices for 18" GT

Post by maisbitt »

Just been unlucky enough to have a puncture on a rear tyre with just 6700miles on it. The tyre was knacked (chewed up the inside rim internally) when Kwikfit removed it to see if it was repairable, with a nice handful of powdered rubber inside. Then came the shock - they wanted £237 to fit a replacement! That price was for a Continental, the best they could manage for a standard fit Dunlop Sport 01 235/40 R18 95/Y was £212, but i'd have to wait a week, or a Michelin was £189. I politely declined, and had the spacesaver fitted and limped home. Tried Costco - they could do the Dunlop for £189, then went on the net. Tried all the cheap places like "black Circles" for about £159 etc until I found "Tyre Xpress" - £143 to deliver the tyre to a nominated local fitter to fit. Is this the cheapest anyone has found a direct replacement for the standard fit Dunlops?

I thought the standard tyres were bridgestone potenza's....In my experience i think they are the best, and are not over the top expensive.

Potenzas and Dunlop Sport 01s re both standard tyres for 18" interlagos. A lot of people with Potenzas have complained about the lack of grip, but as mine came with Dunlops, I can't comment on how good the Potenzas are on the Scirocco. I had 17" Potenzas on my previous Golf GT Sport TDI - they wore down quickly and had poor grip. I've had no problems with grip on my Dunlops, and they have a generous rim overhang to avoid scuffing your alloys (not sure if the Potenzas do)

I thought that Tyre price comparison would be a good topic seeing as it's the main thing people will have to pay out for on a car that is still under warranty. £237 quote down to £143 is useful information, maybe someone can better £143? Saw crappy no-makes for about £68 fitted.

Anyone looked at winter tyres? These seem to be arounf same figures quoted above for Pirelli Sotozero which do make 18" size to fit.

You can get cheaper prices at places like KwikFit if you pre-order the tyres online before you go. It's not huge but it's better than a poke in the eye. I've got the dunlops on mine by the way and I'm very happy with them.

If you want to buy some good winter tyres i would suggest you look for continental wintercontact TS810S tyres, they are very good.

Having never bought tyres off the net, how does that work?
Do you literally get them delivered in the post then you have to go to KwikFit etc and ask them to fit the tyres you've got lobbed in the boot? And does their extra fitting charge negate the saving?

You usually get two options have them delivered and take them somewhere like Kwikfit to be fitted (although some Kwikfits want do this for tyres they haven't supplied) or on sited like black circles you can have a supplied and fitted price where they are delivered to a selected garage local to you and then fitted there.

Richio: I dont think the Avon ZZ3s are suitable for the Scirocco. They come with a load rating of 91, and the Scirocco needs 93 minimum. Putting on an unsuitable tyre (speed or load rating inadequate) could (and probably would, if they had a get-out clause) invalidate your insurance if you crashed after a blowout.

The "Y" speed rating for Scirocco 18" tyres appears overkill though. "Y" rated tyres are tested for 186mph - way over the top for even a Scirocco R.

Try these guys:
http://www.mytyres.co.uk

Good price for a replacement - Dunlop SP SPORT 01 235/40 R18 95Y XL with rim protection, only £123.10

I've used this company before. Great service. You order, they deliver the tyres to a garage of your choice (not just Kwikfit) and you pay them to fit. It all worked out fine.

Lastly, my Scirocco is fitted with Dunlop SP Sport's too.

91 load rating = 615kg per tyre!!!!! - A rocco does not weigh 2460 kg

Richio: The Scirocco is quoted for a minimum tyre load of 93, those are the facts that you can find at VW and many tyre match databases. I wouldn't put Avons with 91 rating on a car that is supposed to have a 93 rating.

I'm sure it's not as simple as weight of car must be less than 4 x 615kg, the front tyres are burdened with 60 - 70% of the total car weight when it contains just front passengers. take into account cornering, and at some point during cornering at anything above a crawl, one of the front tyres will have forces exerted on it that must be coming close to a 615kg load on it, if not exceeding it.

If VW could make these cars and be confident of the safety implications of putting cheaper tyres (not knocking the brand here, just the physical price) on with a lower load rating then they would do so. They don't like throwing money away, they're a business.

Gary_monkey - i'll have to remember that place for next time (hopefully when the fronts need replacing, not another puncture). It would've saved me £7 over the fitted price for a single tyre from TyreXpress, although there was a £7 surcharge with TyreXpress for a single tyre order that wouldn't apply for 2 or more tyres, so they'd probably end up the same price for a pair.

I don't know if you're right on this, as i've just looked up the standard fit 19" tyre size and they are all load rated at 91. If the scirocco needs a minimum of 93, then why do VW specify 91 at the 19" 235/35 size?
