Victim of the Snow
Had a small incident with my Scirocco not being too keen to stop in the snow, even though I was moving at very slow speed. I hit the back of a Focus at a junction but fortunately nobody was hurt.
The bumper looks completely undamaged but the honeycomb grill and bits in behind it are well smashed. First crash I've had in my 12 years of driving.

Don't think he had any, otherwise he would have stopped in a shorter distance.ticklerNOR wrote:Try better snow tyres:)
Sorry for your car ABN1C. You must feel awful
Re: Victim of the Snow
snow tyres & chains aren't legally required (or from what I can see particularly widely available) in the uk.
hope you get it sorted ABN1C

Winter tyres are not a mandatory requirement in Germany either, however if you do have a crash in winter conditions and the Police feel it is a contributing factor they can decide to prosecute.
The Insurance companies also take this into consideration and may only payout a percentage of the damage to your car.
They look at it as if you were prepared to accept the risk of not having winter tyres then they are only willing to 80% of the claim.
I have found the Pirelli P-Zero tyres next to useless, I’m not sure if it is the tread pattern or the rubber compound but they are no were near as good as the continental tyres I had last year (having said that I only got 8000 miles out of the continentals, so it is all down compromise I suppose) .

Gotta agree with the P-Zero's, I've been going everywhere sideways for the past week.

Re: Victim of the Snow
Sorry I've not been on for a few days, thanks for everyone's support. The damage is all cosmetic and the car is stil perfectly drivable. The only problem is how long it will take to get fixed with Christmas coming and the body shop being more than a little busy due to the bad snow.
ticklerNOR - snow tyres aren't that common in central Scotland, as it only ever snows one or twice a year and even then it doesn't last very long.

Re: Victim of the Snow
Oh, I was also 'randomly' pulled over for a breath test on friday night by my friendly local police. My crime was driving out of a car park in town around midnight. I appreciate the need to clamp down on possible drink driving this time of year, but it's a bit annoying to get pulled over when you've done absolutely nothing wrong.
So that's my first ever accident and first ever breath test in the space of two days!

Re: Victim of the Snow
Thats funny, I got that too driving into work last week. I saw the Copper spy the nice car and let everyone past waiting to pull me...he was very pleasant though so I couldn't complain. Rather that than some drunken twat T-bones my shiney car cause he had one too many the night before.ABN1C wrote:Oh, I was also 'randomly' pulled over for a breath test on friday night by my friendly local police. Re: Victim of the Snow
Is it pot luck what tyres you get, or does it depend on your engine/trim variant?
Everyone says the standard Pirellis are sh1te, but it seems that I was one of the lucky ones to get Michelins. Have had no complaints so far, grip is far better than my old Golf TDI170 that was equipped with Pirellis, but not sure if that is the mainly the tyres or the car.
Maybe you were pulled just so the bobbies could get a close up look at the Scirocco.

Re: Victim of the Snow
The same thing happend to me in my R32, first bump in over 12 years skidded towards the Junction on a un gritted side road for a good 7 / 8m and hit the back end of a bus on the main road. I need a new bumper as the front right hand side is broken as well as the plastic slat grill and my headlight washers. £1000 pound quote to repair itABN1C wrote:Had a small incident with my Scirocco not being too keen to stop in the snow, even though I was moving at very slow speed. (WHO CARES ABOUT THE BUS)
4wd helps you accelerate but isn't any help stopping you
I agree with the above posts, 18" wheels with dunlop sports maxx tyres are completely useless in this weather.Im seriously considering buying a set of winter wheels for my Rocco R, (either that or a old Land rover to use if it snows next year )

Re: Victim of the Snow
I also confirm that the the Pirellis are useles in snow, but they are summer tires afterall. Just bought a set of winter tires 205/55 r16 with steel rims. I know the car will look awful but the guy I got them from made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Plus I get to spare those beautiful Interlagos...
