Fire extinguisher and first aid kit

Post by Crossbone »

Where do you keep your fire extinguisher and first aid kit? I keep mine in the boot but everytime I take a quick turn, they start bouncing in the back. I tried to tie them down but couldn't figure out a way. Any suggestions?

I've put a couple of Velcro hook pads on both of these.
I popped the fire extinguisher under the passenger seat on the carpet (It is a small extinguisher).
The first aid is strapped in the back left corner of the boot with Velcro hook pads holding the top half.
They appear to be holding in place. If fact I had to reduce the number of pads used as they were proving hard to release. They grip the carpet VERY well.

Can you post some pictures? And is the fire extinguisher held into place by something or is it just sitting under the seat?

Remembered today that I need also to fit the larger Fire Extinguisher I keep inside the passenger cabin besides the small one I've been carrying around for the last few weeks. So did a bit of swapping around today.

Fitted the larger extinguisher under the passenger seat. The Velcro hook pads are 25mm x 25mm. They stick to the carpet very well and get better after the car has vibrated them down into place. The small one has stayed in place during accidents in the past using this arrangement.

With the seats on their lowest settings, there is enough room to slide the seats back and forth without the Extinguishers fouling on the seat frames. Just have to watch the positioning relative to the seat electrical cabling.

If I find the larger Extinguisher is not secure enough, then I plan to cut two slots into the carpet and put a Velcro strap arrangement round the Extinguisher and through the carpet. (This one has normally been on a bracket attached to the front of the seat in previous cars).

The Large Extinguisher is a BC Powder 1Kg unit.
The Smaller Extinguisher is a Halon 600g unit.

The First Aid Kit is now tucked up behind a boot liner so not able to photograph. Before putting in the boot liner, it stayed in place with the Velcro hook pads holding the top half to the boot carpet wall and the strap around the bottom that VW provide in the back nearside corner of the boot.

Thanks a lot RW1, you've been most helpful. Next job: finding a shop where they sell the velcro pads.
spamdog, aren't you forced by law in the UK to keep a fire extinguisher, warning triangle and first aid kit in the car at all times? Well you are in Europe!

I find it so stupid that in other european countries you have to keep bulbs in the car, but no tools to change them with, cos lets be honest, how many people could change a bulb at the side of the road now adays, and if I go to say france, does that mean I have to carry a spare HID bulb, which is gonna cost more than £100! Hope not! Totally agree with fire extinguisher and first aid kit and warning triangle tho. I've got my first aid kit and warning triangle velcro'd in the rear footwell and my fire extinguisher is there as well.

Although this thread has made me think about velcroing some emergency sandwiches under the passenger seat!

Why did you velcro'd your triangle in the back? Mine has a special place in the boot, fitted there from the factory. Don't you have that in the UK?

Yes, the fitment holder is there, but not standard on the UK to have the triangle installed (iirc) as a factory fit.

If you redirect the hot air vents further back under the seats, you can have toasties on the move for breakfast!

The Touring Safety pack's First Aid kit is much larger (red pack). It's about twice the height of the boot corner pocket. Hence why I had to use Velcro hook pads on the top half.

Gosh, to be honest, I've driven so many hire cars on the continent in the last couple of years (which have everything including a proper clipped on fire extinguisher in the cabin), I'd failed to notice that my Scirocco has nothing... thanks for prompting!

I have the touring pack also, thats why its velcro'd in the rear footwell and not in the holder in the boot. To put it in the boot would mean removing the triangle, then trying to find places for the first aid kit and vests, much easier to leave in the supplied bag and velcro in the footwell. I also have a hatchbag bootliner in my boot because I work on a boat so keep my wet weather gear in the car regularly so cant velcro stuff to the boot because its all covered in tarpaulin type material. Does that answer your question Crossbone. :)

Halon... now thats nasty stuff.... We have it in the data farm at work, and whenever we go in we have to isolate the fire system and take BA with us... if it goes off and your further than 10 meters from the door its pretty much game over!!! Its heavier than air and settles inside your lungs.... nasty nasty!!!

OTOH, awesome at putting out flames!!!
