Anyone else had any issues with the std wheels/tyres?

Post by bwfly88 »

I have on two seperate occassions had issues with the durability of the std wheels/tyres.
On one occassion I was driving about 40mph down a road and hit a rock that somebody had put on the side of the road, this caused the whole wheel to shatter, there was a crack in a complete circle causing the outside of the alloy to come away from the inside. When I took it to the tyre fitters he said it was the worst conditioned wheel he had ever seen and it made us question the stregnth of the wheels, he sid it felt pretty light to him. Ended up costing me £300 for a new wheel.
Then the other day i hit a pot hole, driving not verry fast down a country road and they tyre 'burst' and got a hole in the sidewall of the tyre. Had to buy a new tyre which cost £150!
Plus got my first service coming up so this car is loving me spending my money!

Oh wow, sounds like you have been very unlucky. I have done approx 4500 miles in my Roc, and no problems like that at all. Have you raised your concerns with the dealer? I suspect they may just blame it on bad luck? :(

I've also not heard of any problems like this from anyone else on this forum.

Hmm, I'd speak to the dealer about that. Alloy wheels shouldn't just shatter.

When I first saw the design of the standard wheel I wondered about it's strength, the central area is really quite small considering it's size. I can imagine this would be an even weaker point on the 19" versions.

Saying that, I don't think many wheels would withstand being driven into a rock at 40mph

Big issue at the minute with BMW 19" wheels which is being spearheaded by Watchdog. My old man has shattered two now on potholes although he was running 30 profile tyres. Could be similar issues with some VW wheels.
