Coolant

Post by CTRnutter »

right I thought I best check the oil today because with the new dry roads and the sun I have been giving the car a bit of stick, to my surprise though my coolant level was below the min level!!!

Anyone have any ideas, yes the car is re-mapped but surely that wouldnt effect the car that much that it drinks coolant! :)
Car is now Sold!!!!! BMW 7 Series for now as nice and big but holding out for something a little special as my toy :)

What's the latest with your gearbox troubles CTR? Are you still only using it in Drive waiting for them to get a replacement lined up?

Driving it in Auto and manual, it slips into sport when the car has been on a longer drive but it doesnt lock into place and the linkage is always very stiff in the morning so I'm just leaving it alone for now, but I only really use the paddles when driving anyway

Goes in on the 5th, they have a courtesy car for me to use and they have a good will gesture waiting at the garage for me :) but I had to go through hell to get that far with them!

Mine has used a bit of coolant too, just bought a thing of it from the dealers.

Still not used a drop of oil though in over 6 months 4800 miles - I had heard VAG engines can drink the stuff.

Expect the coolant level to drop ever so slightly on a brand new engine. The dilution from factory is more than sufficient so you just need to top it up with water.

Started my car up this morning and the MFD said "STOP" Check coolant level. I was immediately concerned but checked anyway and found that the level had indeed dropped just below the minimum level. This was a bit of a surprise as my previous cars have never needed topping up at all.

This is my first turbo charged car so can only assume extra heat and hence cooling required means that coolant levels are likely to drop a bit faster.

Car had not been used for 10 days and did not get that warning last time so was a bit surprised.

I checked with my local VW dealer who advised just to top the level up with water and now it is ok again. I thought they were going to say you must only top up with VW approved coolant! Anyone else had this particular issue? Temp. gauge reading was normal.

Dont think the turbos doing it, I've had a few cars with turbo's, petrol and diesel and none ever used coolant, ever! Even my really old wrecks I used to run around in!! Better check mine, never looked at it yet, just checked the oil and its spot on. How many miles has your car done?

car has done just over 2,500 miles so not many at all, and yes my previous cars like yours Alan have never needed topping up, so just a little surprised. Will have to keep an eye on it.

K?
Please explain "used a bit of coolant". New one on me. So do I conclude the new Scirocco runs on petrol/diesel and water?

Never had a VW drop coolant level ever unless there is a leak.

I find it odd that the Max and Min marks on the spherical coolant tank are round the side rather on the front where they would be easier to see, especially when its all got a bit mucky under the bonnet after a few months.

Just checked coolant level again this morning (from cold) and it is halfway between min and max levels. Yesterday when I topped it up it was on max. I am hoping this is just expansion as engine had been running yesterday.

Will give it a run now, supposed to be driving it to London tomorrow but no sign of leakage.

Got in my car today and the coolant warning came back again on the MFD. I had this last Oct. ( pls see previous posts) and topped it up with water as per VW recommendation and all was fine. Today though the warning came back. I don't think this is correct, my previous 3 cars never needed coolant top ups and I am loathed to put water in it with these freezing temperatures.

Car is due for service in March so I will get VW to check it. Anyone else had this problem?

I forgot that I had made that very decision with my rado in the summer. It was frozen solid when i eventually remembered between christmas & new year; i got it into the garage and left it with a heater for 24hrs - I returned to establish that all of the water had relocated to the floor, so promptly closed the door and haven't been back to see it yet......

During my first service my coolant was topped up. They appeared to put plenty in as its well above the full mark, this suggests to me thats its know to diminish quickly between services...

Many thanks guys for that. I put a small amount of distilled water in there as there is still a very strong solution of anti freeze or G12 I think they call it. Warning has gone - for now!

Got the 'Check Coolant' message appear on the MFD today, 3rd time that has shown now in 17 months of ownership, sure enough the expansion tank level had dropped to below the minimum. I still find this surprising, my previous cars, I never had to go near the radiator for top ups. VW insist all is ok at its last (and first) service :?

No sign of leak, I am ashamed to say I have only done 1,400 miles in the last 5 months so it is not that it is used very much either, maybe thats half the problem! :)

I have two VWs that stand a lot for long periods, 6 months winter and infrequent use in summer. Neither normally looses a drop of coolant. When one did recenlty, it was the water pump. Hard to find at first so I put a set of newspapers down under the engine bay area on the garage floor. Eventually a stain appeared. It was dry when I got to it, which would explain why it wasn't visible when I looking previously as the garage floor is painted.

It shouldn't leak if the system is 100%.
