Urgent advice - To buy or not to buy?

Post by iAmbu »

Hi all

I have been on this forum for a good while now, and have wanted a Scirocco for a long time! I finally settled on a factory spec, as follows:

2.0 TSi (petrol), DSG
Candy White
Leather
Sat Nav + Dynaudio
Parking sensors
Electric folding mirrors
Flat tyre indicator

I was up until this evening planning to order one, not sure when, but ASAP as I want / wanted it for March 2010 delivery. But a spanner has been thrown into the works....

My friend's Dad works at a local VW dealers, and he called me this evening informing me that they had received in (literally that hour) the following spec car, which is deemed to be their new demonstrator vehicle:

2.0 TDI 170 diesel, manual
Candy White
Leather
Dynaudio
19" Lugano alloys

The list price of that spec is £24,320. I have been offered it for a total of £23,500! A good price I think.

Obviously, it is not the spec I would factory order, however I know that if I owned that car I would be over the moon - To put this into perspective, I am currently still driving my first car, a 1.0 litre Seat Arosa, '52 reg !!!!

I have also driven the 140 PD engine in a Golf, and the 140 CR engine Scirocco, and thought both had LOTS of power! Therefore the 170 is bound to be better than both of those...

So, I need to decide whether to buy it or not - By tomorrow morning! The dealers need to know if I want it or not, as if I do, they need to stop it being turned into a demonstrator.

Pro's:

Better fuel economy
Cheaper insurance (possibily)
Cheaper road tax
Bigger alloys
Available now! (although they would hold it for me until September 1st, so it was a '59 reg)

Con's:

It's a manual, not DSG - I did love DSG when I test drove with it, I think the main reason was because when in heavy traffic it is so stress-free. But I have put up with traffic in my manual Arosa for 5/6 years, and drive manuals at work, so I am confident I would be happy with manual. With the power of the 170 diesel, I would have a permanent smile on my face and I think the manual vs. DSG debate would escape my mind! I also no longer live in or near any big cities so traffic is never AWFUL.

No sat nav - But can be bought off eBay brand new and retro-fitted easily
It's a diesel, and I wanted a petrol - But I know the power would be very very ample for me, plus better fuel economy. Remember what I currently drive!!
No parking sensors - Have been quoted £380 + VAT for these to be retrofitted by VW, although these would not link in with the touchscreen (audible only)
No electric mirrors - Not a big problem in my opinion
No flat tyre indicator - Not a big problem

So, what should I do??? Opinions please!! I need to decide by tomorrow morning. Have to say, I am going out for a meal soon, so won't be back online until later tonight if anyone has any questions for me, to help me decide.

Oh, by the way, I do a maximum of 15,000 miles per year. More likely around 12,000 or 13,000.

EDIT: Also, if I took delivery of a factory order, either late this year or next year, I would also have to pay the VW price increase, which I believe will be 3% effective from this September, and also possibly the VAT increase, which will go back up to at least 17.5%, but may be higher!! No-body knows.

Cheers!!

Go for it!

Parking sensors are for vehicles with totally lack of rear visibility/people who finds it tricky parking a small car

DSG = You will propably leave it in D and forget about what driving is all about. :)

Considering my own preferences I would miss the sat-nav, but I'm sure you will settle with a tom tom or retrofit RNS510 the day you find a cheap one on ebay!

Good luck mate!

Mmm I think that's quite a tough call actually.
It's quite a bit different to a 2.0 petrol but compared to what you've got it'll feel like a rocketship. See if they'll throw in dealer parking sensors (or at least do them half price). I think they're a must tbh.

The insurance and road tax will save you quite a bit and with the mileage it will probably be cheaper to own overall.

Yeah go on, go for it :)

I was in a similar situation, Wait for the car with my spec ( 2.0(140)TDI, folding mirrors, rear parking sensors, tyre monitors ) or go for a demo car
( 2.0 (140)TDI with just rear parking sensors and lux mats), I couldn't wait so I went for the demo and have never regretted it, I'm 60 and loving it.
JUST GO FOR IT AND ENJOY!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

Forget the retrofitted sensors at that price - you should be paying less than £200 for a retrofit kit with audio only - the box of tricks is only about £60 - so they're charging hell of a lot in labour. My local VW dealer does the retrofit kits for £165 fully fitted!

My spanner... Don't buy it!

If you go for petrol & DSG, it sounds absolutely great when it changes gear!

Ooops, too late :p

Though, I'm sure you'll enjoy the 170 too. I suppose it depends on how impatient you are!
