A few queries for Scirocco newbie.

Post by JMP »

Hello Scirocco owners, I'm on the verge of ordering a new Scirocco GTD 170 as my new company car for January 2010 and wondered if any existing owners could clarify a few things for me... cheers in advance !

1) I've looked at two today in a showroom, one had the older steering wheel showing 'GT' at the bottom and another the new steering wheel with more shiny metal (?) on the three spokes without the 'GT' shown. Is it possible to get the new steering wheel still with GT shown at the bottom instead of two metal (?) prongs ?

2) The SAT NAV DVD unit, the salesperson said she 'thought' the DVD navigation info went onto and operated from a hard drive enabling the DVD to be removed and the drive used for playing CD's whilst driving (or DVD films when stationary) instead. Is this true? All my other cars have needed a navigation DVD inserted in order to work and just bothered she's told me wrong and may need a 6CD changer to ensure both the SAT NAV and a music CD can be used together.

3) Anyone know if the 170 GTD has chrome exhaust ends like the 2.0 petrol GT?

Thanks for any help you can provide and apologies if posted in the wrong forum section. Had a good read through this forum last night and couldn't confirm these things for sure.

Just for info, I'm looking at the new 170 GTD, probably in Candy White with Sat Nav & Parking Sensors fitted. Would like the leather seats and Dynaudio but they're pushing it a bit beyond my budget. I'm currently 39 and this will be my first 'non sensible' family car (!) having driven a Mondeo, Passat & Avensis previously. Can't wait for January... :D

Oh, another thing.... Candy White or Reflex Silver? Not seen any white ones on the road round my way yet... (West Lancs) so that's rather appealing.

Cheers.

1) Not sure, have to ask the dealer, but I doubt it.
2) Once the DVD files are copied across (dealer should do this before delivery), then you do not need the DVD. Make sure you get a copy of the DVD though, it's rightfully yours (and sells for a reasonable amount on ebay :D ). The car can play DVDs when stationary, though will cut out once moving. It can also play DVD-R's and CDs of MP3s from the drive, whilst using the Nav!
Do not get the 6CD changer! - That way you'll get the USB connection, and then you can plug 16Gb USB drive in which is way better than splitting music across 6 CD/DVDs! Oh, also has SD (non SDHC) card reader.
3) Sorry can't help you on that - too new, not seen a 170GTD!

Personal opinion, even though I'm a fan of Silver (last 5 of 7 cars have been Silver!), I'd go for White in this case!

Thanks for the reply. Think I'll skip on the 6CD changer now seeing as I can still use music CD's in the unit and retain the USB/Ipod connection unit.

Just seen another post where someone has said the 170 GTD has chrome tail pipes. :)

Do both TDI models have a red "i" within tdi on the rear or this only the 170 version?

Hi JMP, Welcome!!!

Hope we can answer your questions suitably

(I can't help on the first two points, but..)

3) from seeing conversations with the diesel boys I don't think they do have chrome tips but someone has found some aftermarket ones to add (think its Klippie) & has put pics up.

& on the colour debate every other car on the road is silver, white looks Very good but how deadicated are you to cleaning it or not touching it & getting that untouched 'dirt sheen' on it? :D

They've never come with a GT badge. That must have been added from a golf GT. The little silver bit just pops out and can be swapped.
I think the new wheel design is completely different so I'd be surprised if the GT badge fitted.

Reflex Silver - Looks the muts !

Yes, nearly every car on the road is silver, but nearly every Scirocco on the road is white !

I almost went for Pewter which also looks great, but having seen one in that colour for a couple of test drives, I think light colours suit the car best (just my personal taste of course),
otherwise Rising blue would have been another choice but I think its a bit OTT, think I'd get fed up of it quickly

I'm well chuffed with my choice, Reflex Silver with Black leather, Sweet 8)

I went with candy white - but just saw a red roc at my local dealers when I was collecting the Passat from a service. Had I seen a salsa red before ordering it would have made the choice a bit more difficult.

Thanks for all the replies. On the colour choice, it get's more difficult  I'm put off by Reflex Silver as people have said, there's loads of silver cars on the road, I did like the Pewter Grey (nice blue tint to it) but do think lighter colours show off the black elements far better. Strangely, all the Scirocco's I've seen on the road so far have been red, blue or darker colours, not see a white one although realise they seem most popular on here and as stated by VW.

Plan on visiting the same dealership again shortly to run 'Candy White' by the missus... will take a pic of that GT steering wheel I saw to see if we can ascertain where it came from.

P.S. thanks for the welcome Trix. I've since seen that chrome tip advice, will have to follow that up if the 170 GTD doesn't come with them.

From reading various posts, the 170 TDI GT does have chrome, it's the 140 that doesn't :(

Thanks. Are these any good for the TDI 140?

You can change the colour / spec of your order up until you have a fixed build date, so change it if you're not sure. May impact on your build date though.
08/11 - 12/13 2.0 TSI R DSG, Black / Black Vienna
01/09 - 08/11 2.0 TSI GT DSG, Black / Truffle Vienna

Black is the new Black....
